Chapter 410: Heaven Has No Ceiling Here
Chapter 410: Heaven Has No Ceiling Here
"When you two come back," Bane said, and his voice dropped to something low and even, "you’ll find a different answer waiting."
He stood with that for a moment.
Then, slowly, the hard edge in his expression softened into something more complicated. He unclenched his hand and let it fall to his side and thought about Bruce. About the heal that had just moved through every person in Velmora without Bruce asking anything in return for it. About the number of times in recent memory that the scales had tilted in the Reign family’s favour because of that young man’s involvement.
He thought about Sophie, SS Ranked now, moving faster than Bane had moved at her age by a considerable margin. Some of that was her. Most of it was her. But some of it was the environment around her, the people she was tied to, the situations she had been pushed through.
He picked the ledger back up.
He didn’t say anything out loud. That wasn’t how Bane operated. But the thought was there, honest and quiet underneath everything else.
Bruce had been useful. More than useful. He had been the kind of useful that changed outcomes. The kind that was hard to account for and harder to repay.
Bane was not a man who forgot those things.
He found his place on the page and kept reading.
Meanwhile Bruce finished his stuff satisfied since he had casually increased everyone’s base strength. Even the base strength of unawakened humans had increased by a lot, their potential higher than it was before.
His gaze moved directly to Sophie. She was training.
Sophie trained when things got loud. It was how she processed things. Always had been.
She was in the open courtyard behind the east wing of the Reign estate, moving through a sequence of strikes to train her sword form.
She moved well. She always moved well, but there was something different in it now, something with more weight behind it, the SS Rank sitting in her body with the particular confidence of someone who had earned it recently enough to still feel its edges.
She hadn’t noticed him yet.
He stood at the courtyard entrance for a moment and just watched, his presence was completely hidden, so Sophie won’t notice unless he allows it.
There was something about seeing her like this, focused and unhurried, not performing for anyone, just working, that he had carried with him across a very long stretch of time and distance without fully realising he was carrying it.
Then he revealed his presence and she stopped mid strike.
She turned around.
The surprise on her face was real, which Bruce appreciated. Sophie was not someone who performed surprise. If it was there it was genuine.
"Bruce."
She said his name the way you say something you’ve been thinking about for a while and then suddenly it’s standing in front of you. She crossed the courtyard toward him, not running but moving with purpose, and stopped a few feet away, looking at him properly. Reading him the way she had learned to read him, which was carefully and with full attention.
"You’re back," she said. "I sensed you earlier. All of that," she gestured vaguely upward, meaning the domain, meaning everything that had come through the domain, "doing all of that must’ve taken something out of you."
Bruce smiled.
"I’m okay actually."
She looked at him for another moment. Checking. Making sure the words matched what she was seeing.
"You look different," she said.
"Good different or bad different."
"Just different." She tilted her head slightly. "Stronger. It’s in the way you’re standing."
He hadn’t thought about the way he was standing. He almost said that and then didn’t because she would take it as confirmation and she would be right.
"Come on," he said instead, and held out his hand.
She looked at the hand. Then at him. "Where are we going."
"Up."
She took his hand.
The moment she did he lifted them both, smooth and unhurried, rising straight up from the courtyard with no wind, no turbulence, no sense of effort on his part whatsoever. Just the ground falling away beneath them. The estate shrinking. The city of Valkrin spreading out below in all its noise and colour and movement, the streets like veins, the buildings like something built by people who had decided to stay in one place and meant it.
Sophie even though she knew he was SSS rank, was still surprised by the sudden flight but she didn’t tense. Now she just looked down at the city with her hand in his and let the altitude happen around her.
They cleared the rooftops. Then the tallest towers. Then the upper edge of the skyline entirely and there was nothing above them but open air and the particular quality of light that existed up here, cleaner somehow, less interrupted.
Bruce levelled them out at a height where the city below was visible in full but the details had softened, where you could see the shape of things without being inside the noise of them. The wind up here was steady and cool and moved through Sophie’s hair in a way that she didn’t bother fixing.
She looked out at Velmora spread beneath them.
"I’ve fulfilled my promise..." Bruce smiled...
"Yes..."
"How do you see it..."
"Your arm is the most comfortable place in the world, it’s been a long while since you’ve took me in if, remember back then when you carried me running at high speed in your arms..."
"Yes i do..."
"Your arm is the best..." Sophie smiled lovingly...
She was quiet for a moment...
"How far did you go," she asked. "While you were gone, how was your trial."
Bruce looked out at the horizon. The way the land curved at the edges of sight, the forest giving way to open ground, the distant suggestion of mountains catching the late light.
"Far," he said.
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the honest one. I’m still measuring it."
She looked at him sideways. He could feel it without turning his head. The particular quality of Sophie’s attention when she had decided she was going to get a real answer eventually and was simply choosing her moment.
He turned and looked at her before she could pick her moment.
"The trial opened my eyes to something even more deadlier than invaders..."
"What?" Sophie frowned...
"The Universe is Dying..."
He was about to say more but whatever he had been about to say didn’t get said, because she was looking at him with something in her expression that hadn’t been there before he left, or maybe it had been there and he hadn’t been close enough to see it clearly. She could feel the heaviness his heart when he said that
He kissed her.
Or rather she kissed him.
The wind whipped around them like a living thing, cool and insistent, as he soared through the open sky with her cradled securely in his arms. Her legs wrapped around his waist, one hand fisted in the fabric of his shirt at his chest, the other tangled in the dark strands of his hair.
Below them, the world blurred into streaks of emerald forests and silver rivers, the distant lights of a city twinkling like scattered stars, but up here, nothing else existed.
She kissed him first.
It wasn’t tentative or sweet, it was hungry, urgent, born of the adrenaline singing in her veins and the impossible thrill of being weightless in his embrace.
Her lips crashed against his with a soft, breathless sound that was instantly stolen by the rushing air. Warm, plush, and insistent, they parted his almost immediately, her tongue sliding in to taste him, salt and heat and something faintly sweet, like the lingering trace of the night air on his skin. She kissed him like she was claiming the sky itself through him.
He responded instantly, one strong arm banded across her back, the other supporting her thighs as he tilted his head to deepen it.
His mouth moved against hers with a slow, devouring rhythm that contrasted the wild speed of their flight, firm pressure, then a teasing pull of her lower lip between his teeth, just enough to draw a muffled gasp from her throat.
The kiss grew wetter, hotter, their breaths mingling in shared exhales that fogged faintly in the cool altitude. Tongues stroked and curled, slow and sensual, then faster, matching the pounding of their hearts.
Every shift sent sparks racing down her spine. She could feel the low vibration of a groan in his chest, rumbling against her breasts as the wind tore at their clothes.
Her fingers tightened in his hair, tugging just hard enough to angle him exactly how she wanted. He answered by pulling her even closer, bodies pressed flush from chest to hips, the powerful beat of whatever kept him aloft thrumming through both of them.
The kiss broke for a fraction of a second, only so he could nip at her swollen bottom lip, then soothe it with his tongue, before she chased his mouth again, sucking lightly on his tongue in a way that made his arms flex around her and his flight path waver for one exhilarating heartbeat.
They spun lazily through a cloud, cool mist kissing their heated skin, but it did nothing to quench the fire between them. Her cheeks were flushed, lips slick and tingling, breaths coming in short, desperate pants between kisses that never fully separated. He tasted her smile against his mouth, joyful, wild, utterly alive, and answered with a deeper, slower kiss that felt like falling and flying all at once.
In that moment, suspended between earth and heaven, wrapped in his arms and lost in the velvet heat of his mouth, the sky belonged to them alone.
