Chapter 104 The Way Back
Chapter 104 The Way Back
"You... this is your first time transforming into human form?" Chu Xinyao recalled the rumors that the powerful fish-dragon had failed to transform into human form and thus failed to break through to the ninth rank, becoming a fallen beast.
The man was clearly at a loss, with blood trickling down his abdomen and extending into his smooth fish-skin skirt.
He nodded slightly, his eyes glazed over, his fingers unconsciously stroking the edge of his fish-skin skirt, as if he were very uncomfortable with it.
"Yes, this is my... first time." His voice wasn't unpleasant, but it carried a hint of awkwardness from someone who had just learned to speak. Each word seemed to be squeezed out of his throat with considerable effort.
Chu Xinyao was not fooled by his current helplessness. She still remembered his attack before; he had even tried to eat her. Moreover, he was a fallen beast. Who knew if his current state was a trick by the fallen beast to lower her guard?
She was alert and said coldly, "How do I leave?"
“Just swim around.” His voice was somewhat uncertain, as if he didn’t have much confidence in this method.
Wandering?
Looking at the boundless sea around her, Chu Xinyao felt a sense of helplessness. Not only could she not swim, but even skilled swimmers would find it difficult to reach the shore; this sea was simply too vast and too dangerous.
Her gaze fell on the man again, trying to find answers in his expression, but all she saw was confusion and helplessness.
She took a deep breath, calmed herself, and asked, "Are you sure this is the only way? Then how did we get here?"
The man was silent for a moment, then, as if he had thought of something, he said somewhat shyly, "We came here because I wanted to go home, so the Beast God sent us to the Fish-Dragon Clan's territory. If we want to go back, then... then..."
Chu Xinyao was getting impatient. Why should he? He can come back whenever he wants, but she wants to go back. Why won't the Beast God let her go home?
"The Beast God? Are you sure it was the Beast God who brought us here?"
The man nodded, a resolute glint in his eyes: "Yes, I can feel the power of the Beast God, and it was He who guided me back to human form."
Chu Xinyao snorted coldly, not buying it. Looking around, she saw that the sea was vast and the waves were surging. As someone who couldn't swim, there was no way she could swim back.
She grew increasingly anxious, but she knew very well that now was not the time to vent her emotions; she needed to calm down and find a solution.
"Do you have any way to contact the Beast God and have it send us back?"
The man shook his head, his helplessness even more evident: "I don't know. The will of the Beast God is beyond the comprehension of a fallen beast like myself."
"You have memories?"
He lowered his head, avoiding Chu Xinyao's probing gaze. "A little."
"Then why did you attack me?"
The man's voice was tinged with shame: "That's because... because I lost my mind. I wanted to get close to you, but somehow, I... I couldn't control myself." His words were filled with self-reproach.
Chu Xinyao remained silent for a while. Faced with a beast that had lost its mind, no amount of accusation would help.
"Alright, I'll believe you for now. So what's your situation? You're not going to suddenly turn into a fallen beast, are you?"
Upon hearing this, the man's face turned pale, and fear appeared in his eyes. "No, no, I've... I've already controlled myself."
Although he said he had it under control, his tone wasn't entirely certain.
Chu Xinyao's heart skipped a beat. No way! Could it really be true?
She was filled with unease, but she forced herself to calm down.
"Tell me first, how did you become like this?" Now is not the time to panic; she needs to find a way to save herself.
The man sighed, a hint of pain flashing in his eyes, as if recalling a past buried deep in his heart. "I am a male beastman of the Fish-Dragon Clan. Originally, our clan possessed great beastly strength. While other cubs on the Beast God Continent could transform into human form at the age of 3, the cubs of my Fish-Dragon Clan could only do so at the age of 8 to 10." His voice was slightly low, carrying an indescribable heaviness.
"I never took human form until I reached adulthood. I was very powerful. I was born with a sixth-level red-grade aptitude, and after reaching adulthood, I reached the eighth level in one fell swoop."
His voice initially carried a sense of pride, but this was quickly replaced by a feeling of helplessness. "Our Fish-Dragon Clan is sparsely populated, and I am the only male. If I don't produce offspring, our Fish-Dragon Clan will truly become extinct. So, I decided to attempt to break through to the ninth rank, but I failed." The man's voice was filled with sorrow. "My power was stripped away, my mind was devoured by the surging power, and I became a bloodthirsty, murderous fallen beast."
"If it weren't for you, I'm afraid I wouldn't have regained my senses." The man looked up at her, his eyes filled with hope, as if he had seen a glimmer of hope.
"Me?" Chu Xinyao pointed at herself, her eyes full of confusion. What did this have to do with her?
"I was in a daze until I smelled a strange odor."
Chu Xinyao raised her hand, sniffed it, and found that it didn't smell at all!
The man slowly approached her, took a deep breath, and said, "It was this fragrance that led me to the water's surface, wanting to see clearly, but my subsequent actions... made me lose control. But I really didn't mean to. I didn't intend to hurt you; I just wanted to get closer to you." His words were full of sincerity, as if he were trying to explain his actions, hoping that Chu Xinyao could understand.
Chu Xinyao didn't know what to say. Looking at the harmless-looking man in front of her, whose eyes were full of expectation, as if she were his only hope.
"You mean my scent briefly brought you back to your senses?"
The man nodded, his eyes filled with deep gratitude. "Yes, it brought me back to my senses from my madness. After that, when I saw you fall into the water, I transformed into human form and went to save you."
"Then, the Beast God listened to your innermost thoughts and sent us here?" Chu Xinyao was filled with doubts. All of this sounded too mysterious for her to believe.
"Ah."
Chu Xinyao pondered for a moment, her brows furrowed, and then proposed a bold plan: "How about this, we do it again. I'll go into the water, you come and rescue me, and then you think about going back to where we were before, no, anywhere else is fine, just not in this ocean." She hadn't forgotten that there were people who had kidnapped her there before, and she didn't want to go back to that dangerous place.
She pinched her nose and prepared to jump into the water.
"Wait," the man suddenly called out to stop them.
But it was too late. With a "plop," Chu Xinyao jumped into the sea, and the icy water instantly surrounded her.
Her heart was racing, her breathing was rapid, and the salty taste of the sea filled her mind. She tried to stay calm and not let fear take over.
Seeing this, the man immediately jumped into the sea. He moved quickly, and after a few moments in the water, he swam to Chu Xinyao's side. He reached out, grabbed Chu Xinyao's arm tightly, and pulled her out of the water.
