Chapter 119 Crisis on the Highway (1)
Chapter 119 Crisis on the Highway (1)
...Suburbs of Atlanta.
In the post-apocalyptic city, the zombies have become a paradise. Humans have almost disappeared, and the once towering buildings are now a scene of utter death.
After leaving the CDC, Allen Lee and Rick's group drove south along the outskirts of the city, away from the city center, where they stopped for a rest last night.
Early in the morning, Rick went up to the rooftop alone, turned on the walkie-talkie at the time he had agreed with Morgan, and said, "I guess you'll never hear my voice again..."
"But opportunities always exist, don't they?"
That slim chance...
"Right now, all opportunities are slim..."
"I try to do everything right, to make sure people are safe..."
“I did my best, Morgan…”
"I tried my best..."
Rick paused here, gazing at the towering skyscrapers in the distance, a fleeting look of confusion crossing his eyes...
"..."
But Rick quickly composed himself and continued, "The CDC is a dead end..."
"We met a man there, a scientist, who told us something that was far worse than we knew..."
"But that's irrelevant now. The important thing is, we still have hope..."
"He's joined our team too, and now we're moving forward..."
"Atlanta has fallen, we need to go to Fort Benning military base..."
"We are about to embark on a long and arduous journey..."
"It may be more difficult than I imagined, but it won't be more difficult than what we've been through so far, will it?"
"125 li... there's still such a long way to go, I'm trying not to lose faith..."
"I cannot lose them either, otherwise, what about the others..."
"My family, my wife, my son..."
"We have more people now, and supplies are even scarcer, so we must unite as one and encourage each other..."
"Our lives are in each other's hands; if circumstances force us to, this is our only chance..."
"Morgan, be careful out there. I hope you and Dwayne are safe."
"Stay away from the road, don't stop, keep your eyes peeled for anything..."
"I don't know what to say, just be careful..."
"Perhaps we will meet again at Benningburg..."
"Rick, all done."
After Rick finished speaking, he turned off the walkie-talkie, took one last deep look at the desolate city buildings in the distance, remained silent for a moment, and then resolutely turned away.
He went downstairs to meet the others, and then left Atlanta...
......
chug chu...
The roar of motorcycle engines echoed from afar on a secluded road, breaking the tranquility of the area. It was Lee Allen and Rick's convoy.
Daryl led the way on his motorcycle. A strong afternoon wind, carrying a hint of heat, blew in his face. His face was covered in dust, a testament to the fatigue of the past two days of travel.
Traveling long distances in the apocalypse is no easy task.
Along the way, they encountered various crises: roaming hordes of zombies, wandering raiders, and a shortage of supplies...
They collected usable supplies along the way and took a detour, finally getting away from the Atlanta metropolitan area and heading south towards Fort Benning.
Soon, the convoy got onto the highway, and this time they no longer had to take detours, saving a lot of time.
……
Rick's family and Carol and her daughter rode together in one car, following behind Dale's RV.
"..."
Lori sat in the passenger seat, watching the scenery rushing past the window. Suddenly, she recalled something from many years ago, and a smile appeared on her face as she said:
"I just remembered that trip to the Grand Canyon with Carl."
"..."
Rick glanced at his wife in surprise upon hearing this, then, remembering something, he burst into laughter as well...
Little Carl in the back seat was completely confused. He couldn't remember ever going to the Grand Canyon, so he said with a bewildered look, "I don't remember that..."
"Of course you don't remember, you were just a baby then..."
Lori tilted her head and smiled as she explained to her son, "Besides, we haven't even arrived in Fort Worth yet."
"No, you were sick then..."
Rick chimed in with a laugh, "I never knew babies could vomit so much."
"..."
Little Karl, who had initially thought it was an interesting story, frowned and disgustedly retorted, "How disgusting..."
"Yes, it's disgusting."
Rick and Lori exchanged a smile.
"The doctors in Texas said you could survive, so we turned around and went home."
"How boring..."
When young Carl learned that it was just a failed trip, he lost interest.
"No, that trip was great."
Lori, however, said something else entirely.
"The best one ever."
Rick nodded in agreement.
"Can we go take a look? To the Grand Canyon?"
Hearing this assessment, little Carl became even more interested, and asked his father expectantly, "I want to go."
"I want to go too."
At that moment, Sophia suddenly spoke up from behind.
Overhearing the family's conversation, the little girl, who also longed to see the Grand Canyon, asked somewhat nervously, "Can we go?"
"..."
Lori didn't say anything upon hearing this, but turned her gaze to her husband, waiting for the head of the family to make a decision.
"If I go, I'll definitely take you and your mother with me,"
Rick turned and looked at Sophia, then solemnly promised the little girl, "I promise."
"..."
After receiving the promise, Sofia nestled contentedly in her mother Carol's arms, looking forward to the promised trip to the Grand Canyon.
......
Rick and his group were followed by Lee Allen and Susan's car.
"..."
In the driver's seat, Susan gripped the steering wheel with both hands, but her eyes kept sneaking glances at the man sitting next to her, who was lost in thought, through the rearview mirror. She bit her lower lip lightly, her face showing a conflicted and hesitant expression.
Today, Amy was called to the RV by Andrea, so she had a rare opportunity to be alone with Lee Allen.
"..."
After Li Ailun finally snapped out of his reverie by looking out the car window, he immediately noticed Susan's hesitant expression and took the initiative to ask:
"What's up?"
"You...you insist on going to the CDC, your real purpose is actually to get the information on the Wildfire Project, right?"
