Chapter 134 Gunshots in the Woods (3)
Chapter 134 Gunshots in the Woods (3)
...Outside the church.
While everyone else was resting inside the church, Lori slipped out unnoticed and found Sean, who was standing guard outside all by himself.
"..."
She struggled internally for a long time before finally mustering the courage to ask softly, "Are you really going to leave?"
Sean smirked, trying to appear relaxed, and said nonchalantly, "Don't you think this is the best thing for everyone?"
Even so, a fleeting hint of melancholy flashed across the depths of his eyes.
"That's right..."
Lori stared intently at Sean, trying to glean something from his expression, and pressed on, "What made you make this decision?"
"I've given up. I just want to be a good person here."
Suppressing the bitterness surging in his heart, Sean turned his head, looked directly into the woman's eyes, and said, word by word:
"Lori, even if you can't understand, this wasn't intentional, and I hope you can..."
"You just vanished into thin air like that?"
Seeing that he had made up his mind, Lori's emotions suddenly surged. She abruptly took a step forward and said in a questioning tone:
"You didn't even tell Rick?"
"He'll only try to stop me..."
Sean shook his head. He knew Rick too well, but Lori's unusual reaction filled him with doubt, so he asked curiously:
"Isn't this exactly what you wanted?"
"..."
Lori's feelings were extremely complicated at this moment, and she couldn't even figure out what she wanted to say, so she changed the subject and said, "What about Carl? We've dragged him into this."
“I love Carl.”
He thinks you hate him.
“I’m trying to keep some distance; I want to make things easier.”
Sean turned to look at her again, and said earnestly, "But this isn't easy for any of us, especially for me..."
"I'm the one who lost you..."
At this point, Sean's tone carried a hint of grievance and resentment.
"..."
Lori stared blankly at the man in front of her, her heart filled with mixed feelings. She wanted to say something, but in the end, she remained silent.
She silently turned around and slowly walked towards the church.
"..."
Sean gazed intently at Lori's departing figure, a question he most wanted to ask lingering in his heart, but ultimately remained silent.
Because he knew in his heart that this woman's answer would only make him more upset.
Suddenly, Sean caught a glimpse of a figure in the corner of the wall.
Upon closer inspection, he was surprised to see Andrea staring at him with a look of utter shock.
"..."
Andrea's face was filled with disbelief; she was clearly still trying to process the astonishing information she had just overheard.
A brief silence fell as their eyes met in mid-air, and an awkward atmosphere filled the air.
"..."
Sean could tell from her expression that she had overheard his secret with Lori, so he glared at her angrily, then turned and left quickly without saying anything.
"Wait a moment......"
Andrea snapped out of her shock and quickly jogged after him, but what she said next was unexpected:
"I want to go with you..."
......
"I don't know what the hell you're talking about."
Sean gave a perfunctory reply, but quickened his pace, determined to get rid of this troublesome person behind him.
"I'm not stupid, and I'm not deaf. I don't know any story..."
"No story..."
"Fine, I don't care. Don't try to fool me with those tricks you use on others..."
Andrea quickened her pace and rushed in front of Sean, reaching out to stop him. Looking directly into his eyes, she said, "Right now, all I care about is how to get out of here."
"Go as far away as possible, just like you..."
"And then shall we set sail together under the setting sun? Hand in hand?"
Sean's lips curled into a mocking smile as he sneered.
“I don’t want to be with you, Sean.”
Andrea naturally sensed the sarcasm in his words, but still said earnestly, "I want you to take me away from here..."
"I don't understand."
Seeing that she didn't seem to be joking, Sean frowned and said with a puzzled look, "Your sister is still here."
"You've seen Amy's attitude towards me now..."
Andrea was somewhat resentful, but Amy's recent attitude had truly chilled her heart.
Fearing Sean wouldn't believe her, she added, "Have you been observing this team recently? I have!"
"I've realized that two people don't belong here—it's us. You and I are both superfluous..."
"So what if that's the case? Can you really abandon your sister and leave?"
"..."
Andrea paused for a moment, then said somewhat forlornly, "She already has someone to protect her; she doesn't need me anymore."
Sean knew who she was talking about, but he still refused outright: "Then why should I help you, this burden?"
"To have the opportunity to do something for others..."
Andrea tried to persuade him on moral grounds, but seeing Sean's unmoved expression, she immediately changed tactics, saying, "Okay, put yourself in my shoes. Give me a gun, and I'll protect you too..."
"laugh......"
Sean laughed out loud as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world.
This woman is really overestimating herself.
"..."
Seeing his disdainful expression, Andrea was indignant and about to argue when she caught a glimpse of Rick coming out of the church. She could only quickly say:
"Think about it."
After saying that, she turned and quickly left.
"..."
Sean stood alone, his mind a jumbled mess, impossible to unravel.
......
Half an hour later, everyone had rested enough and began to emerge from the church one after another...
"We should go, brother."
Sean walked over to Rick and said, "These guys are exhausted today."
"It will be dark in a few hours, and the journey back is still long..."
"..."
Rick didn't respond to Sean, but just stared blankly at the cemetery in front of him, lost in thought.
"The road back is still long..."
As Sean spoke, he noticed that Rick's expression was a little off, and his heart skipped a beat. He tentatively asked, "Rick, what's wrong?"
"Sean, look here..."
Rick looked somewhat bewildered and slowly said, "So far from the outside world, so peaceful..."
"..."
Sean's gaze swept over the tombstones on the open ground before returning to Rick, and he asked with a puzzled look, "This is a cemetery, you don't mean you're planning to stay here, do you?"
"I have no idea......"
Rick hesitated for a long time before finally speaking his mind, saying in a heavy tone:
"I'm not sure if continuing to go to Benningburg is the right choice. I'm afraid it will be another mistake, like my decision to go to the CDC..."
"Now look what's happened, they've made you doubt yourself."
Upon hearing this, Sean couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.
He and Rick were both police officers, and they were both keenly aware of the unusual emotions of some people in the team. However, their thoughts were completely different, and they didn't have these worries.
"What about you?"
Rick looked at his longtime best friend and asked, "Do you doubt me?"
"..."
Instead of answering directly, Sean looked away and said, "We've all made mistakes."
"But every decision we make concerns the life and death of the entire team. Since everyone trusts us, we must be responsible for everyone's safety and must consider things carefully..."
Rick didn't grasp the deeper meaning in Sean's words. His brows furrowed. The future of the team, the safety of his family, and the heavy pressure to survive had been weighing him down like several mountains, making it hard for him to breathe.
"My God..."
Sean looked at Rick, momentarily at a loss for words.
He never intended to be some kind of savior; in this world, preserving his own life and the lives of those he cared about was the most important thing.
Within this team, there are only a handful of people he truly cares about.
"..."
Seeing Rick's conflicted expression, Sean was speechless. He simply patted Rick on the shoulder, then turned and walked towards the crowd behind him.
