Chapter 51 Chicken and Duck Coop
Chapter 51 Chicken and Duck Coop
The next day, Xia Lihua finalized the location. The chicken and duck coops needed to be placed in a relatively spacious and dry place, and the duck coops also needed to have water.
Actually, Xia Shiyu initially thought it would be better to build it directly on the other side of the mountain, which would also make it convenient to let them out for a walk.
However, Yu Juan thought it wouldn't work. The house was too far away and she would have to ask someone to watch over it. Besides, the house was easier to manage and less likely to get sick outside. Moreover, if it were stolen, she would lose everything.
So in the end, it was decided to build it a short distance to the right of the yard, so that the house wouldn't smell bad and it would be easier to manage.
Fortunately, in the countryside, each household has a relatively large area, and there is a large open space between neighbors, which can be cleared out to build chicken and duck coops.
Fortunately, Xia Lihua's work on the construction site was quite easy, but the ground needed to be covered with cement or straw to make it easier to clean.
Xia Shiyu decided to just use cement, as it would be much easier to clean that way.
"Dad, isn't it too tiring for you to do all this by yourself? Should I go and call some people to help?"
Xia Lihua waved his hand, "No need, no need. Anyway, the chickens and ducks at home are still so small. I can take it all by myself."
As he spoke, he went to mix the cement. Once the cement was ready, he could build the structure piece by piece with bricks.
Xia Shiyu didn't say anything after hearing this, but instructed, "Alright then, just be careful not to overwork yourself."
"Don't worry, I won't."
After hearing this, Xia Shiyu left to do other things.
She didn't let her mother help with the process, but instead had her learn about the precautions for raising chickens and ducks.
Especially regarding the prevention and control of viruses like avian influenza, it's important to know that once chickens and ducks are infected, they almost all perish.
A few years ago, one family's pig accidentally got infected, and almost all the pigs in the village died. That's when their family stopped raising pigs.
Otherwise, Yu Juan would be doing a lot of work and getting nothing in return, and she wouldn't even be able to eat fresh meat. Even with her grandparents' help, they couldn't come every day.
Thinking of this, Xia Shiyu peeked out and asked Yu Juan, "Mom, when are Grandpa and Grandma coming back?"
Yu Juan paused for a moment. "I remember it seems to be soon. They went to your uncle's house for a while and said they would be back in the next few days."
“That would be great. When Grandpa and Grandma come back, they can come over and play for a while. Or I can send them the vegetables I grow. They haven’t had any of the vegetables I grow yet.
Xia Shiyu's maternal grandparents were taken to a neighboring city by her uncle during the summer vacation, supposedly for a short trip, and they've only just returned.
"Sure, sure. I'll give them a call when they get back and invite them over."
Yu Juan thought the same way; after all, it would be a shame not to come and enjoy the delicious food more.
Xia Shiyu nodded, glanced at the chickens and ducks, and then took the two puppies, which had grown a bit bigger, out for a walk.
She called out, "Nuomi, Huangdou, come for a walk with me."
The two puppies, "Woof woof woof," have become close to the family members after being fed by Xia Shiyu for the past few days.
Xia Shiyu wasn't worried that they would run away and never come back, but she did have to be careful that the two little ones weren't stolen, since there were always some dog thieves around the village.
Xia Shiyu took the two dogs out for a walk and went to check on the lettuce he had planted in the nearby fields. He found that it had already sprouted a few leaves and should be ready to harvest in a while.
When Xia Shiyu turned her head, she saw two puppies looking curiously at the lettuce in front of them, and she couldn't resist taking a bite.
"No, bring the glutinous rice and soybeans over here."
As soon as she spoke, the two puppies whimpered a few times and turned their heads to look at her guiltily.
Xia Shiyu stepped forward and ruffled the dog's hair twice. "You two little gluttons, how can you eat this vegetable when it's not even fully grown yet? Eat this instead."
Xia Shiyu took two radishes out of her spatial storage and gave them to the animals to gnaw on.
The two puppies' eyes lit up and they pounced on it, hugging and nibbling on it incessantly.
Xia Shiyu was essentially giving them a special treat, since radishes in the real world don't ripen until winter, and the seeds hadn't been sown yet, so she couldn't just take them out and let the two dogs have some for now.
These two dogs also love to eat vegetables from the fairy tale world, and they can even nibble on chives. Xia Shiyu was initially worried that they might have health problems.
After consulting the system, I learned that the vegetables and fruits produced in the fairy tale world are not only delicious but also good for health, which is why the animals like to eat them.
Xia Shiyu felt relieved after hearing this. It seemed to be true. The residents of Animal Town were all animals, and it seemed that nothing happened to them after eating vegetables that were not on their diet.
After checking and finding that the lettuce was growing well, Xia Shiyu took a few photos and then went home.
When they returned, they happened to see a family in the village harvesting fish from their fishpond.
She had intended to go around it, but after only a few steps, she was spotted by someone. The family called out to her, and she had to stop.
"Oh, it's Shi Yu. You just came back from the fields."
Xia Shiyu searched her mind for the corresponding person, then stopped and replied, "Aunt Yan, I'll go check on how the seeds I recently sowed are doing."
Jenny smiled. "Oh, I knew it. But I saw your vegetables growing really well when I passed by."
Then he picked up a fish weighing about 3 pounds from the fish that had just been caught and walked over.
"You've come at the perfect time. My family is fishing right now. Why don't you take one home and we can eat it together?"
Xia Shiyu pushed it back, saying, "This is too expensive, Auntie."
"Oh, take it if you want, it's alright, I have plenty at my house."
"Take it, Xia Mei."
Xia Shiyu pushed it a few times, but seeing how kind Yanni was, and with the people around her also letting her take it, she simply accepted it. Then she took the basket off her back and gave away most of the vegetables.
"Then, Auntie, you should try some of the vegetables I grow. We can cook them together with the fish later."
Jenny hesitated for a moment, but after thinking about it, she took it.
"You're too kind, child. That's perfect. We'll just use this dish when we cook later."
"Okay, Auntie, I'm going back now." Xia Shiyu said goodbye and left.
On the way, two puppies probably smelled the fish and kept barking, clearly craving it.
Xia Shiyu pushed the two dogs that were running around randomly away, but they ended up blocking people's way, which left her feeling quite helpless.
"Don't block the way. I'll make it for you when we get back."
Finally, having exhausted all other options and finding that the two puppies weren't running particularly fast, Xia Shiyu simply grabbed one in each hand and carried them home.
