Chapter 256 – The POV of a Common Man.
Chapter 256 – The POV of a Common Man.
[Chapter Size: 2500 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
The army of King Daemon Targaryen and his allies still stood entirely in front of King's Landing in the following hours. Gradually, the army began to leave their positions, as they saw that the enemy camp had no intention of launching a possible attack against them that night.
Then, the commanders began to withdraw the men from their positions, as they turned toward the camp area and gathered around the bonfires to eat before sleeping in their tents.
"I think that after everything we went through tonight, we can finally rest, or process what we saw... May the gods forgive me...", beside Farlen, a fellow soldier's voice came, speaking with others next to him.
Farlen could perfectly understand that feeling, a feeling that made one question even the gods themselves after that night. It was obvious, since all the men were still quite shaken by what had happened.
Farlen was a farmer from the Riverlands, in the territories of the Brackens. He had been recruited by Lord Bracken when the Lannisters attacked his lands. He himself saw his village being massacred by the terrible Mountain and, thirsting for revenge, he neither refused nor tried to flee, as many did when Lord Bracken began recruiting.
They placed him in the infantry, even though he was just another misfit. He knew that, to the lords, he was nothing more than another piece of meat waiting to die fighting on the front lines, while knights and nobles occupied safer positions. He was merely a sacrifice that would help win the lords' battles.
But not all were like that, Farlen met some who showed true courage and fought alongside the common folk.
He first fought for Lord Bracken, then for Lord Tully, until he reached the Northern army. Then, he followed his lord, who was under the command of Robb Stark, crossing battles in the Riverlands and surviving until then.
When Robb Stark fell at the Red Wedding, the armies were scattered. He remained in the defense of Riverrun, eventually becoming a soldier in service of the Wall, under the command of Lord Brynden Tully.
It was then that he met Daemon Targaryen moons later, the current king whom he now served — and whom all his superiors also came to follow.
When he arrived at Riverrun, everyone was nervous, he had already stolen the Tully family's vault and simply advanced toward Riverrun atop the creature that Farlen and everyone else would never forget seeing for the first time, a real dragon.
He was on the wall when Daemon's dragon landed. He would never forget that scene.
Hanging like a monkey between the columns of the wall, he saw King Daemon simply leap and knock down Lord Tully, who was preparing for battle, but Daemon knocked him out with a stone, using magic. He claimed he did not need to fight when he had already faced Lord Tully personally in the vault.
Daemon took his place after that. He asked for Lord Brynden to be taken inside, while he himself would wait for the arrival of the Northern army.
Everyone looked at each other. No one knew what to do. But, at the same time, no one opposed him.
They let him pass… and take the castle.
And so days passed until the arrival of the North. No one disturbed Daemon. Everyone whispered about his magic… about his dragon, which continued flying over the castle like a constant threat.
Its roars sounded like messages that, if they attacked Daemon, the dragon would destroy Riverrun, just as it had done with castles in the North — according to rumors that the Bolton castle had been reduced to rubble.
Then, he was recruited for the war once again, departing for King's Landing along with the main army.
Wildlings, men from the Riverlands, the North, the Stormlands… not even he could believe in that united group.
But they were there.
Following the same man who had arrived at Harrenhal with his dragon, after conquering the West as if it were a game.
Farlen continued watching the men follow him, even the noblest among the lords. All submitted to him. Among the common soldiers, everyone felt fear or admiration — though fear was greater.
After all, his magical abilities were the subject of conversation every night, even more so when it was possible to hear the wildlings beyond the Wall speaking about the conquest of the North or even the Wall itself, and how he had done things that should have been impossible.
Daemon then arrived at King's Landing, executed Tywin Lannister's son, and, the next day, attacked the city, opening the way for the invasion.
Farlen was there, under the command of Brynden and the other men, attacking and invading King's Landing. It hadn't even reached midday, and the city had already been conquered.
Everyone was filled with joy.
They were transferred once again to the outside, setting up their tents. Some men grumbled for not being allowed to loot or even rape.
Farlen did not like that.
He had relatives killed and had seen the women of his village being raped, just like in all the places devastated in the Riverlands. He did not want that fate for anyone. That was why he approved of the king's decision to place men to punish anyone who committed such acts in King's Landing — and some did, ending up executed the next day.
He heard about what happened to the Lannisters. Then, on the day of the execution, he managed to reach the square with the people of the city. It was something unexpected.
He had never seen an execution of that level — after all, it was a Lord Paramount of the Westerlands.
In the end, House Lannister was destroyed...
Then, new challenges arrived.
A few days later, an army as large as theirs appeared. The men grew restless, wondering what would happen.
Daemon went to speak with them. From what he heard among the soldiers, the dragon king called the other a false king, insulted him, and then ordered everyone to prepare for a battle that very night.
Farlen joined the enormous line of soldiers when the king's white dragon left King's Landing.
Then the two enemy dragons advanced to attack the army right after.
There was no point in lying: he thought he would die that night.
However, something unexpected happened.
The green dragon did not attack their men. Instead, it flew away. As for the king himself, he launched himself against the black dragon.
Everyone saw it.
He used his strange magical powers and cast some kind of blue chain, causing the dragon to lose its ability to fly and fall to the ground.
In the next moment, the entire army held its breath.
There was a man… fighting a dragon alone!
Only the king, with his weapon, facing the creature that breathed fire.
Farlen was among the soldiers, his eyes trembling through the slits of his helmet, watching the king's battle against the dragon.
And then… he brought the dragon down completely.
He won.
After that, he tamed the green dragon, which landed beside him. And that was not all, the green dragon obeyed the king without resisting...
At that moment, all the men could talk about was that.
He sat beside his tent, picking up a piece of mutton that was roasting over the fire of his campfire.
"I'm telling you, he spat fire! I saw it with my own eyes! Flames against flames!", a man beside him began, speaking to another soldier who probably had not been able to see the fight, perhaps because he was inside the city or in a bad position.
"You're lying. All of that is just rumors. A man cannot spit fire like a dragon", the other grumbled.
"That is true. He really spat flames against a dragon's fire… and still won", replied another man, with an unkempt beard, clearly lacking manners, as he ate. He was one of the free folk...
"And what are you going to say about that? You believe anything, coming from Beyond the Wall... don't you, wildling?", said the man skeptically.
The bearded man glared at him. "Say that again and I'll cut your balls off", he replied, offended by the comment.
"Hey!", a fourth man appeared, striking the chest of what seemed to be a Crownlands soldier. "Stop provoking him. We've already had some cases like this. You don't want to lose your testicle", he warned, while Farlen stood beside them.
He continued eating in silence, listening to the men nearly kill each other.
The man spoke again. "And about the flames… he's right. I saw it too. The king really threw fire from his mouth", he said, while the other man from the Crownlands made a face.
Farlen could not help but become interested in the man from beyond the Wall. "You met the king there, didn't you? In the North… beyond the great Wall of ice?", he asked.
He had no idea what that Wall was like, nor what it was like to live beyond it, but he was still curious.
The bearded man looked at Farlen, as if expecting an insult, but realized that the man was genuinely curious. "Well… kneeler...", he began, hesitating for a moment. Perhaps that would be seen as an offense to them, but Farlen saw no problem in kneeling before a king. He was just a peasant.
Then, the free folk man continued: "Yes. I still remember very well when King Daemon appeared at the camp. He came out of nowhere. Everyone was suspicious of him."
As he spoke, more men began to pay attention. That was clearly becoming an unheard-of story among them.
"They say the king went to another world… and came back with powers. I don't know if that's true, if another world really exists, or if it was the gods who allowed something like that… but one thing I know: his strength is real." a nervous man among the group added.
No one answered, but all turned their attention back to the wildling, urging him to continue.
"Then he fought a giant." Several men widened their eyes.
"It wasn't just any one… he faced Mag, the king of the giants."
Silence spread. "And he won."
The man continued telling the story, while many still looked in disbelief. Some even raised their gaze toward the giants' camp nearby.
But no one denied it anymore. If he could fight a dragon… then why couldn't he fight a giant?
Even if it seemed impossible. Even if it sounded like a fantasy. According to that man… Daemon did it with his own hands.
He reported that Daemon fought alone against a White Walker — and defeated it. It wasn't in a battle, but everyone there saw it. After that, he went to the North and returned with a dragon, frightening the entire camp of the people beyond the Wall.
Then, he went south, where he met Mance Rayder, who was one of the leaders of the free folk army and former King-Beyond-the-Wall. After that, he returned and managed to dominate the entire camp alone, stripping the title of King-Beyond-the-Wall and taking it for himself.
Then, he began training the free folk, turning them into more disciplined and powerful soldiers, ready to face the people of the south.
Daemon left a few times during that period, until he decided to attack the Wall. Then, they recounted how he advanced through the North, using his abilities as he broke gate after gate, conquering the castles of traitors.
He had heard that story thousands of times. Other men from the free folk and the North had already told similar versions. And, although there were always small differences — after all, stories change from mouth to mouth — there was no doubt that he had truly broken those gates.
"What do you think about the war we are about to fight? Like… we have dragons, but there are still so many men that I can't even count them", one of the soldiers asked after the end of the story.
The men thanked the wildling and went back to eating. Then, the man from the Crownlands broke the silence again.
"I don't know… I can't imagine it", another replied. "We are in the middle of all this… but did you see our king? He simply tamed a dragon and executed members of House Tyrell and House Martell. That's true. I can't even believe what I witnessed tonight. A man defeating a dragon… and beheading lords whose names we can barely pronounce."
"That's why our king is ruthless", replied the man from beyond the Wall, with a malicious smile.
"Well… I heard that white dragon went to the sea. They say a fleet was coming to King's Landing. He probably went to deal with them."
"That dragon destroyed Stannis's entire fleet in the North! I heard some men talking about it! So any fleet at sea has been destroyed by now.", another interrupted.
"Whatever", the man replied, before going back to eating. It was very likely that the fleet had been destroyed — and there was nothing they could do about it.
"Well, whatever happens from tomorrow onward, our king is certain of victory. It just depends on us surviving it… or not", said another, as everyone nodded.
After all, Farlen and those who were in the army's infantry — disposable men — would have to fight for their lives, hoping not to be pierced by a sword, a spear… or an arrow lodged into their bodies.
Everything seemed calm.
Farlen went back to eating.
But then, a sound came straight from the city.
"Od - Ah – Viing!!" First, strange words. Ancient words being heard so loudly that the entire city heard them...
Then, thunder. Almost at the same time, as it burst the moment the last word was spoken.
And then… an energy began to rise.
"It's him", one of the men said, already recognizing it. "He makes thunder with his mouth."
"What do you think he's doing now? I heard that, during the conquest, when it rained in King's Landing, it was him who made it happen… I wonder if he's a god!?" No one had time to answer.
In the next moment, it seemed as if the sky opened, as if a hole were forming. Then, a roar came — and they could see, even from there, over the wall, a dragon coming from the sky, from that hole, and heading straight toward the center of the city.
"Wait… that's not the white dragon!", they said, raising their heads to check if the green and black dragons were still in the distance.
And they were.
The green one merely lifted its head toward King's Landing upon hearing the roar.
"Where did that dragon come from!? Does he have another one?" The men could barely believe it.
Did the king have four dragons now?
Silence took over after that.
"What do you think he's planning?", one asked the other.
But no one had an answer.
Then, suddenly, the same roar echoed again.
Everyone saw the dragon moving from the Dragonpit and heading north.
They did not know what that meant… but that dragon certainly had another mission.
