Chapter 567: Champion Selection (Part 1)
Chapter 567: Champion Selection (Part 1)
Harry nodded, then said a bit awkwardly, "It's totally fine if I'm not chosen. After all, the magic I've mastered… It can't really compare to Wade's. But I still wanted to give it a shot..."
"It's good to try," Theo said. "Besides, your combat skills are really strong—you might actually get picked!"
Wade thought the same.
Harry's written exam results weren't among the best—he had always been a bit lax when it came to memorization and studying.
But when it came to practical combat, he was far stronger than the version of himself from the original timeline who had stormed the Department of Mysteries.
Time flew by, and evening soon arrived. The group headed to the Great Hall, then split up toward their respective House tables.
The enchanted ceiling of the Hall now displayed a night sky, the Milky Way flowing like a silver ribbon, with countless stars scattered across the vast heavens, shimmering in harmony with the floating candles below.
Bats flitted through the air, and pumpkin lanterns hovered above, but no one paid attention to the Halloween decorations. All eyes were fixed on the Goblet of Fire, placed on a chair before the staff table.
Michael entered the Hall smiling, walking in with Daphne. Despite only a short distance, he still made a point of escorting her to the Slytherin table. He even greeted Astoria before returning to Ravenclaw.
"There are three slots," he said as he sat down. "Wade, you're definitely one of them. I just wonder who the other two will be."
"We'll find out soon enough," Wade replied, glancing at the students from the other Hogwarts Houses.
Cedric from Hufflepuff needed no guess—he was almost certainly going to be one of the champions. As for the others… aside from Harry, the House Prefects and the Head Boy/Girl were all strong contenders.
"Look!"
Michael suddenly nudged Wade, gesturing toward the entrance.
Hagrid and Madame Maxime had just walked in, their towering figures practically blocking the entire doorway. It wasn't until they walked past and headed toward the staff table that the students saw the Beauxbatons students following behind them.
But the main focus was Hagrid himself—he had combed his hair into two slick bundles and was wearing an awkward-looking brown suit. As he passed by, a strong and peculiar smell of perfume mixed with hair oil wafted into the air.
"…Merlin!" Wade heard Lisa say in disbelief after a moment. "I never imagined someone trying to look their best could actually end up worse than when they're messy."
"Madame Maxime really does have such grace, doesn't she?" Padma said sincerely. "I thought all the French were supposed to be snobby!"
"Professor Hagrid needs a style consultant," Michael muttered as he tugged at his collar. "For the sake of my eyes, I really should take some time to have a chat with him..."
Then, he looked at Wade with a thoughtful expression. "Wade, when do you have time?"
"Me?" Wade asked, puzzled. "I'm no good at fashion or styling."
"I know," Michael replied. "But I need your magical abilities."
"Then… tomorrow?"
Wade answered uncertainly, still confused as to why they were talking about this while the Goblet of Fire was about to choose the champions.
"Great!" Michael nodded, then covered his mouth and cleared his throat. "So... would it be okay if I brought Daphne with me?"
Wade glanced in that direction and said, "I don't think it'll be a problem… Slytherin girls really are better at this sort of thing."
Even though they wore the same black robes, the girls from Slytherin always added some unique decorations to the edges. The robes were tailored just right, and their jewelry was never excessive—but always elegant upon close inspection.
Of course, the most important thing was this: Michael clearly wanted to bring his new girlfriend into his circle of friends, and helping Hagrid with a new image was probably the entry point he had chosen.
…
The Halloween feast was just as sumptuous as the night before, but almost no one was paying attention to it. Once dinner ended, everyone eagerly looked toward the front of the hall.
Dumbledore stood up and said with a smile:
"The Goblet of Fire will now choose the champions who meet the qualifications. When your name is called, please come forward to the front of the hall and enter the adjoining room, where you will receive preliminary instructions."
He pointed to a door slightly behind and to the side of the staff table.
Then Dumbledore waved his wand. The ceiling dimmed instantly, leaving only a few scattered stars still twinkling; most of the candles in the hall were extinguished, with only the flames inside the jack-o'-lanterns still flickering.
The Goblet of Fire burst into a brilliant glow, sending sparks flying and casting eerie shadows throughout the hall. The expressions on everyone's faces appeared mysterious and unreadable.
Suddenly, the bluish-white flames turned into a vivid red. A streak of flame shot into the air, and a charred piece of parchment flew out from the Goblet.
Dumbledore caught the parchment, examined it seriously, and announced: "The Durmstrang champion — Viktor Krum!"
The entire hall erupted into enthusiastic cheers for the famous Quidditch star, although Krum himself looked far from happy. He walked toward the door listlessly.
"Brilliant, Viktor!" Karkaroff shouted loudly. "I knew it would be you!"
A few seconds later, the second name appeared—
"Natasha Volkova!"
A tall girl with short golden hair stepped out from the Durmstrang group with an icy expression. The applause in the hall was much more subdued.
"Kaspar Grove!"
This time, it was a pale-skinned boy, very handsome, with soft chestnut hair falling neatly. He bumped fists with the person next to him, then happily made his way toward the adjoining room.
"The Beauxbatons champion," Dumbledore said as he caught the next piece of parchment, "Fleur Delacour!"
The silver-haired girl, who resembled a Veela, rose gracefully and walked lightly down the aisle between the tables.
"Lucas Barreau!"
A boy with curly chestnut hair stood up, clearly stunned, as if he hadn't expected it at all.
He looked at Madame Maxime first, then quickly and nervously walked over.
"Clémentine Durand!"
A freckled girl squealed, then immediately covered her mouth. She too hurried toward the side room, while a girl behind her who hadn't been chosen began to cry sadly.
"Why wasn't a Hogwarts student chosen first?" Michael asked discontentedly, tapping the table anxiously with his fingers.
"Look on the bright side," Anthony said. "The most important names always come last."
Sparks shot out once more, and Dumbledore continued to announce:
"The Ilvermorny champion — Seraphina Picquery!"
The girl who had spoken to Wade earlier immediately jumped up, hugged her nearby friends, and walked forward beaming.
"Adam Cagney!"
A gentle-looking boy stood up. He wore a bracelet shaped like a snake on his wrist.
"Ryan Smith!"
A boy who looked like the captain of an American football team got to his feet and strode forward amid congratulatory cheers.
The flames in the Goblet flickered between blue-white and red. After a brief pause, it began to spit out new names again.
