Chapter 39 Purchasing That Cannot Be Shown
Chapter 39 Purchasing That Cannot Be Shown
Meng Fuqing wanted to get away from the mule that kept getting closer to her, but with the reins in her hand, she couldn't avoid it at all.
She couldn't communicate with the livestock, and she couldn't just throw it away; it was like buying a hot potato.
Xie Jin watched this scene, raising an eyebrow slightly. "Are you afraid of it?"
After only three meetings, he thought there was nothing in this world that Meng Fuqing was afraid of.
"Why haven't you left yet?" Meng Fuqing frowned as she looked at him.
Xie Jin gave an irrelevant answer, "Or I'll lead your mule, and you lead my horse?"
Meng Fuqing ignored his nonsense, sat on the cart and pulled on the reins, finally keeping the mule away from her.
"Just tell me straight, what's your purpose?"
Xie Jin suppressed his relaxed smile and bowed to Meng Fuqing. "I apologize for my earlier rudeness. May I ask if you are from Mengjia Village in Shili Town?"
Meng Fuqing immediately thought of Doctor Zheng.
"So what?"
In the short time he spent with Meng Fuqing, Xie Jin had already stopped treating her as an ordinary person.
"Does the young lady know Dr. Zheng Yi? I wonder how he is doing these days?"
"I recognize him. Dr. Zheng just broke his leg."
Xie Jin was taken aback, then slowly frowned: "May I accompany you back to the village? I wish to visit Doctor Zheng."
"Does this person not know he's a wanted criminal, or is he just too confident in his disguise?" Meng Fuqing wondered.
Considering Doctor Zheng's concern for the man's safety and the money, Meng Fuqing thought for a moment and said, "It just so happens that Doctor Zheng is in the county town today. If you want to see him, go ahead and do so."
Xie Jin's eyes lit up, and an expression of excitement inevitably appeared on his face.
After thanking them again, the two walked towards the county government office, one after the other, about three or four zhang apart.
Meng Fuqing saw the oxcart waiting outside the county government office, gestured to Xie Jin behind him, and then drove the mule cart toward the oxcart.
Xie Jin stopped and watched as Meng Fuqing spoke a few words to the old man in the car. The old man looked at him in surprise, then turned his head away as if he were a thief, not daring to look again.
Then Meng Fuqing drove towards him.
"Your identity is not safe in the city. Can you leave the city?"
Xie Jin pursed his lips. "I can, but I have two companions. One of them is seriously injured and has a persistent high fever. I'm looking for Doctor Zheng because of him."
He coughed softly and told the truth, "I followed you because I knew your surname was Meng and that you were from Mengjia Village."
If Meng Fuqing hadn't vaguely guessed his intentions, he wouldn't have bowed down for a hundred taels of silver.
"Find a way to get your two companions out of the city. Doctor Zheng will be waiting for you at the city gate before dusk. I have other matters to attend to, so I cannot keep you company any longer."
After delivering the message, Meng Fuqing felt he had done his duty and was about to leave in his carriage.
Xie Jin bid farewell to Meng Fuqing respectfully, watching her figure disappear into the crowd before driving away in his carriage.
Buying a car took too long, so Meng Fuqing quickly started shopping.
She went to the largest grain store in the county town and, considering the mule's pulling capacity, only bought five shi of black flour and two shi each of refined rice and white flour.
The black face was something to show others in case I fled Qingping County during wartime.
She didn't buy that much refined rice and white flour. Although it's called refined rice and white flour, it's actually just that the husks are removed more finely than brown rice and black flour. It can't be completely free of impurities and can't compare to the white rice and white flour in her space. But she can mix the two together later.
Before the shop assistant could even speak, he was stunned by Meng Fuqing's words and the silver ingots she produced. For the first time, the assistant cursed himself for being blind to people's worth and went to help weigh the grain without saying a word.
Before leaving the grain shop, she asked the shopkeeper for some burlap sacks. Seeing that she had bought a lot, the shopkeeper gave them to her as a gift.
After driving to a deserted alley, I stored all the grain from the cart into my spatial storage. I can come back and buy some more to take back after I've bought other things.
Then she bought some seasonings and spices. Spices were expensive in ancient times, so she didn't buy many. She just wanted to see what was available. After that, she took them out one by one from her space, since she didn't lack any of these.
After stockpiling grain, it's time to stockpile some meat.
Meng Fuqing didn't always bring home the strangled prey she went up the mountain. She would bring back just one, which was enough for her family to eat. She put the rest into her spatial storage, since it would be too extravagant and attract attention.
Currently, she still has quite a few wild animals in her space, including the usual ones and a wild deer.
She bought mutton and pork, along with a lot of offal and pork fat.
There were people selling chickens and ducks on the street, with the chickens and ducks crammed into bamboo cages. Meng Fuqing directly asked the stall owner to move the cages onto her cart.
She only bought a few vegetables, quite a lot of oilcloth, and only some coarse linen. She didn't buy any more cotton since she already had some in her storage space.
Passing by a restaurant, Meng Fuqing handed the mule cart over to the restaurant's waiter and went inside.
The restaurant waitress was clearly trained; even though she had nothing to do with the word 'rich', she didn't show the slightest contempt.
She picked out a few dishes from the menu the waiter recommended and had them pack them into a food box so she could take them with her.
After waiting for a while, a food box containing fried quail, stir-fried clams, scallion-braised rabbit, a vegetarian stir-fry, and snacks and candied fruit was placed in front of her. After paying, Meng Fuqing picked up the food box and left.
While rushing to catch the train, she was still marveling at how diverse the food was in this era, with almost everything available: roasting, grilling, mixing, stir-frying, boiling, and steaming.
Meng Fuqing certainly wouldn't forget about buying an iron pot, but she didn't plan to spend money on it; she would just take it from her spatial storage.
Before leaving the county town, Meng Fuqing bought some more pottery jars, bowls, grains, steamed buns, and snacks.
To be honest, I didn't stockpile a lot of things this time. A lot of it was just to cover up things I took out of my spatial storage. Most of it will be stored away in my spatial storage for the time being.
She had just killed someone connected to the county magistrate and seized her family's storeroom. If she bought too many things and flaunted them back in the village, it would attract the attention of the authorities and give others an opportunity to find fault with her.
As they drove the carriage to the city gate, the guards were still checking people entering and leaving the city with portraits. This time, Meng Fuqing noticed the two portraits besides the one of the scarred man.
The lines in the portraits were simple. Even though she wasn't face-blind, she couldn't find any obvious features in the two portraits. She could only tell that the two people had fairly decent appearances.
Turning his gaze away, Meng Fuqing hurried towards Mengjia Village, facing the setting sun.
When only the last rays of dawn remained on the horizon, there were no other pedestrians on the road besides her.
Meng Fuqing drove the car into the nearby woods. Since the meat her family had bought last time was still uneaten, she stored it all in her spatial storage. She kept a small portion of the steamed buns and pastries, and put the rest into her storage space as well.
Once everything that needs to be packed away is sorted, all that's left is to take things out.
She picked out a few vegetables and some loose down feathers from her storage space and put them into the burlap sack she got from the grain shop owner. Then she took out an iron pot and a small iron stove, and finally filled the jar containing sugar and salt. She then used the remaining burlap sack to cover most of the things on the cart.
Before setting off again, Meng Fuqing washed his hands with mineral water, took out a still-warm roasted chicken leg and some cut fruit from his spatial storage, and ate something to tide him over while driving.
