Ch. 27 - I Didn't See Anything, I Didn't See Anything…
"Chen Shu!!" Fang Ke's face flushed with anger as he snapped."Forget I said anything, Teacher. Please, continue."
Chen Shu shut his mouth and turned to discuss historical knowledge with Teacher Yan.
Sighing, Fang Ke felt much of his anger drain away and continued speaking.
"All three of you have a real chance. There are still twenty days until the final exams. Your academic grades are absolutely fine - the only issue is Beast Taming Studies."
"During this time, try to stock up on as many potions as you can. If you have the financial means, check the black market to see if any Beast Orbs are for sale."
In all of Nanjiang City, only one officially licensed, government-backed shop sold Beast Orbs, but the prices were astronomical and demand far exceeded supply, making them basically impossible to acquire.
Fang Ke could only hope they'd try their luck at the black market, where anything might turn up.
"Every extra point in Beast Taming Studies means a better ranking overall."
Wang Meng and Li Zixuan nodded, mentally resolving to have their reasonably well-off families help purchase potions. Though it would be a significant expense, they could manage it. Like them, top students across the entire grade would go all out improving themselves, each hoping to shine in the finals and secure a spot in the Grade 12 special training class.
Xia Bing, however, looked troubled. She stayed silent, saying nothing.
"Xia Bing, is something wrong?"
Fang Ke asked with concern. As the class's top student, she naturally received special attention.
Xia Bing shook her head, not elaborating.
"Alright then. You three all have hope of making it into the Grade 12 special training class. I have high expectations for you." Fang Ke didn't press further and sent the three back to the classroom.
Chen Shu had also finished his conversation with the history teacher. Judging by Teacher Yan's satisfied expression, he clearly believed Chen Shu now.
"Teacher Fang, don't you have high expectations for me?" Chen Shu asked.
"You just focus on maintaining your current rank."
Fang Ke shook his head, then suddenly remembered something.
"Don't embarrass yourself too badly on the finals. The school administration is furious about this year's college entrance exam failures. They'll probably crack down on underperformers. You might get sent back to the regular classes to avoid dragging down the Beast Taming classes' university acceptance rate."
"Got it." Chen Shu waved dismissively and returned to the classroom.
Dead last? Not happening again in this lifetime.
Back in the classroom, Chen Shu began absorbing the beast taming materials knowledge flooding his mind.
The various rare materials all came from dimensional spaces - their appearances, properties, growing environments, effects, and more all surfaced in his consciousness.
"This world is even more magical than I imagined."
The exotic materials and spiritual herbs in his mind opened his eyes to new wonders, and this was just high school level knowledge.
Soon, the dismissal bell rang. Chen Shu stretched lazily, ready to head home.
"Chen Pi!" Zhang Dali walked in from outside.
"Aren't you supposed to be in evening self-study?" Chen Shu looked puzzled. Regular class students all had evening self-study. "Skipping it. I'm starving. You're buying dinner," Zhang Dali said. "Perfect timing. Let's go."
Chen Shu still had the 100,000 yuan Spirit Suppression Bureau reward in his bag.
The two left with arms slung around each other's shoulders, heading to Nanjiang City's street food district.
After eating their fill, it was already 7 PM. "Let's head back," Chen Shu said, and the two cheerfully rode their bikes toward their neighborhood.
As they passed a shop called 'Beast House,' Chen Shu suddenly stopped.
These shops, which existed in basically every city, customized growth paths for contract spirits by determining optimal diets and potions to maximize their abilities. The staff, known as Beast Trainers, charged high fees that only wealthy families could afford.
Not far from the shop, several people had gathered in a group where two men in black suits had cornered a beautiful young woman.
"Miss Wang, when exactly can you repay our money?" one man asked with crossed arms, his tone unfriendly.
Wang Qinghan remained silent. She owed them 100,000 yuan, and debts must be repaid - it was only right.
"I don't have that much right now, but I'll pay it all back very soon."
Just then, a young girl with a backpack ran over. "Big sister, I finished all my homework. When are we going home?"
The girl was only about ten years old, adorably innocent with her delicate features.
Wang Qinghan was an intern at Beast House. Though her salary wasn't low, she'd spent all her savings and gone into debt to afford an Awakening Ceremony for her younger sister—an expensive ritual designed to increase the odds of awakening a high-potential contract spirit, with even the lowest tier being beyond an ordinary person's means.
The two men's gazes shifted to the girl behind Xia Bing.
"Cute little girl. Your sister, I assume?"
The man reached out to pat the girl's head, but Wang Qinghan blocked him. "This has nothing to do with her. Don't even think about touching my sister," Wang Qinghan warned, her expression turning icy.
"Getting scared now?" The man's expression darkened as he spoke viciously. "If you don't pay up soon, I'll erase all your sister's homework with an eraser."
Wang Qinghan froze: "???"
"Couple of complete morons."
A buzz-cut man smoking under a nearby tree cursed under his breath before walking over and smacking both men hard on the head.
"Useless trash. You can't even collect a debt properly." The buzz-cut man cursed again before turning to Wang Qinghan.
"With interest, that's two hundred thousand total. I expect to see thirty thousand every month. You work at Beast House - your monthly salary is at least that much." His tone brooked no argument.
In the distance, Chen Shu and Zhang Dali parked their shared bikes as options appeared before his eyes.
[Option 1: Cover your eyes and walk past, constantly muttering: "I didn't see anything, I didn't see anything..."]
Completion reward: Skill Book - Violent Sitting Kill
[Option 2: Step in decisively to help the woman escape her predicament.]
Completion reward: Medium Beast Taming Power
[Option 3: Join the evil forces and pressure the woman to pay.]
Completion reward: Title - Already Blackened. Effect when equipped: Transforms your contract spirit's personality to evil and cruel]
Chen Shu's expression shifted. Without hesitation, he strode forward with determined steps. "Chen Pi, those three look like serious trouble. Let's not get involved," Zhang Dali warned.
Against regular students, they could hold their own, but these guys required careful consideration. Chen Shu remained silent, marching forward with purpose.
"Ah, screw it. I'll go crazy with you this once!" Zhang Dali rolled up his sleeves, ready for action.
"Kids?" The buzz-cut man immediately spotted the two approaching—they clearly came looking for trouble.
Just as all three thugs tensed up, ready to throw down...
Chen Shu suddenly slapped both hands over his eyes, muttering non-stop: "I didn't see anything, I didn't see anything..."
