Chapter 416 The Demise of the Si Family (4)
At this moment, the media reporters gathered at the government gate also noticed the car and swarmed forward, their cameras and microphones all aimed at the people getting out of the car, with shutter clicks ringing out one after another.
"Are you Dr. X?"
"This is your first public appearance. Could you talk about your plans for this trip to Singapore?"
Reporters crowded in front of the cordon, their voices rising and falling as they pushed forward. After all, before this, Dr. X had only been known by name but never seen in person, and not even a clear audio recording had ever been made public. This was truly "international news."
"Make way, everyone! Please do not disturb the doctor!"
The guards quickly stepped forward and set up a safety barrier next to the car, gently but firmly keeping the reporters who were getting too close at bay.
Outside the gate of the Zhou Mansion, Si Chu, Liu Jinnian, and Bai Lin were already waiting, their faces tense in the wind.
Especially Liu Jinnian, whose fingertips were slightly clenched, his eyes unable to hide his excitement.
As a former medical student, Dr. X's achievements in his professional field had long made him a "leader in the industry" in his heart. Now that he could see it with his own eyes, his admiration almost overflowed from his eyes.
After the guards cleared the passage, Si Chu stepped forward first, extended his hand, and said in a solemn and respectful tone: "Dr. X, it is a great welcome to Singapore."
Si Chu's smile was warm, yet contained just the right amount of politeness.
A prominent figure in the medical field like the doctor holds scientific and medical resources that others can only dream of. If he could be won over, his path to becoming the leader of Singapore would undoubtedly be much smoother.
His hand, which was hanging in mid-air, froze. Dr. X didn't even lift his eyelids, showing no intention of responding.
A surge of displeasure instantly welled up in Si Chu's heart, but he suppressed it and didn't let it show on his face.
Even if the other party is the renowned Dr. X, such an attitude of ignoring people is far too arrogant.
Seeing this, Liu Jinnian, who was standing next to him, quickly tried to smooth things over in a low voice, her tone carrying a hint of protectiveness: "Secretary-General Si, please don't overthink it. Dr. X has always been like this."
People who do scientific research often have eccentric personalities, but they focus all their attention on their profession; it's not that they're deliberately being lazy.
As he spoke, he couldn't help but glance at Dr. X a couple more times, his curiosity rising like vines in his heart.
The other person was completely covered up; a large hooded jacket covered most of their face, and a black mask concealed their mouth and nose, revealing only a pair of eyes hidden in the shadow of the hood.
He wasn't very tall, and his build was rather thin. His coat was so loose that it completely obscured his body shape, making it impossible to tell whether he was male or female, or guess his age.
For some reason, Liu Jinnian felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if he had seen it somewhere before, but he couldn't remember where.
Si Chu suppressed his emotions and tentatively spoke again, softening his tone: "Dr. X, I'm really sorry, but according to the state's security regulations, anyone entering must have their identity verified and undergo a check."
Please take off your mask and hat so we can check them.
It took quite a while for the other person to finally speak. His voice was hoarse, like sandpaper rubbing against wood, with little intonation, and he sounded like a middle-aged man.
His tone was harsh and unpleasant: "I'll just go in like this. No need for inspection. If you don't let me in, I'll leave right now."
Si Chu's brows furrowed instantly, and the doubt in his eyes deepened.
The legendary Doctor X, though eccentric, would never so vehemently reject basic rules.
He glanced at his secretary beside him, and the secretary immediately understood. She stepped forward and asked in fluent English.
"Dr. X, I apologize for bothering you, but I previously read your book 'Frontiers in Molecular Medicine,' written in English. Your views on gene editing were truly impressive. I wonder if you are still deeply involved in this field?"
Dr. X didn't move, but responded calmly in English, speaking at a steady pace, using professional terminology with ease, accurately and profoundly, without the slightest hint of pretense.
The secretary immediately switched to German and mentioned his early work, "Studies in the Pathology of Rare Diseases," which he published in German and remains a classic in the medical field.
Dr. X answered fluently as always, and even added two details that were not elaborated in the original paper, accurately stating the journal name and volume number when the paper was published.
Next, the secretary tried Latin.
It's worth noting that Dr. X once wrote a compilation of ancient medical texts in Latin, a language that very few people are proficient in today. Yet, Dr. X handled it with ease, his Latin pronunciation was standard, and his interpretations of professional books were incisive.
After trying three languages, Dr. X proved flawless throughout, which completely dispelled Si Chu's doubts. He put on a smile again and gestured for her to enter: "I was just being paranoid, Dr. X. This way, please. I'll take you inside."
The guards at the gate had already stopped the surging media, and the reporters could only hold up their cameras and take pictures from a distance. As they watched the group walk into the state capital, they whispered among themselves, their voices full of amazement.
"I never imagined that Secretary-General Si was so capable, managing to invite even a 'reclusive' figure like Dr. X. It seems that something really big is about to happen in Singapore this time!"
"That's right, Dr. X never comes out of seclusion. What's he here for this time? Is it because of the governor's illness?"
After passing through several corridors, Si Chu went straight to Madam Si's bedroom.
His primary purpose in inviting Dr. X was to treat his mother's illness.
Pushing open the door, the room was quiet, with only half the curtains drawn, and soft light falling on the bedside.
Madam Si lay quietly on the bed, her face as pale as a sheet of paper, her lips bloodless, her eye sockets slightly sunken, her once round cheeks much thinner, and her breathing so light it was almost inaudible. The thin blanket covering her body barely moved, and at a glance it was clear that she was extremely ill.
As Dr. X approached the bedside, he glanced at Liu Jinnian, the secretary, and two servants standing guard in the room. He immediately spoke, his voice still hoarse, but now carrying an undeniable seriousness: "The consultation must be conducted in silence. All irrelevant personnel should leave."
Si Chu was stunned for a moment, then immediately waved his hand.
"Everyone go out first and stand guard outside the door. Don't let anyone come in and disturb us."
Liu Jinnian and the others dared not say anything more, quietly closed the door and left, leaving only Si Chu, Dr. X, and Madam Si lying on the bed in the room.
As soon as the door closed, Bai Lin, who was waiting in the corridor, quickly walked to Si Chu's side, her tone filled with disbelief, and she deliberately lowered her voice: "Secretary Si, is that person inside really Dr. X? You didn't really invite him here because you want him to govern the state governor, did you?"
Si Chu leaned against the wall in the corridor, tapped the wall with his fingertips, and a meaningful smile appeared on his lips. His tone was full of disdain: "How could that be? You know that the governor has been bedridden for so long that he has long been in a vegetative state."
His body was so weak that he could barely absorb basic nutrients. Even if Dr. X's medical skills were superb, could he possibly bring someone back from the dead and wake them up from a vegetative state?
He paused, glancing towards the bedroom door. "I asked him to come here to maintain a good reputation."
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Madam Si, who had been lying quietly, suddenly opened her eyes.
She raised her hand, grabbed Dr. X's sleeve, and said in a commanding tone, "You are Dr. X. I need you to treat the governor."
