Chapter 421 The Demise of the Si Family (9)
Chapter 421 The Demise of the Si Family (9)
"no need."
Just as Si Chu's last bit of patience was about to run out, the governor finally spoke in a deep voice, his tone unwavering.
"I know my own body best."
He turned to Yan Lan, his coldness vanishing instantly, replaced by genuine gratitude: "Dr. X, thank you so much this time."
If she hadn't exposed the truth, he would probably have remained in the dark until the very last moment.
As he finished speaking, a fierce glint flashed in his eyes. After all these years, it was time to settle those scores that had been covered up.
Yan Lan gripped the pen, her knuckles turning slightly white, a voice in her heart almost bursting out of her throat.
"How could I possibly abandon you? You are my father!"
There was a time when she was convinced that the governor was a heartless scumbag and didn't even have the thought of acknowledging him.
But after learning the truth from Mrs. Si, she realized that he was also a victim of that conspiracy.
For so many years, he has had no children and has devoted all his energy to governing Singapore, simply trying to numb himself and forget the pain of the past by keeping busy.
"Doctor, I'll personally escort you out."
After saying this, the governor tried to sit up, supporting himself on the hospital bed. He needed to see her leave the mansion with his own eyes before he could be completely at ease.
"Careful!" Yan Lan abruptly put down her pen and rushed forward to help.
He had been unconscious for a long time and had just taken medication. If he suddenly got up and got out of bed, he would very likely faint again.
Si Chu, standing to the side, stared intently at the pen, his hand clenching tightly at his side, wanting to snatch it, but restrained by the unclosed live stream, his eyes filled with resentment.
But the governor only swayed slightly before straightening his spine.
He was a soldier, and even when he was so sick that he was wrapped in a large hospital gown, making him look tall and thin, he would never be crushed by difficulties.
"Old Tao!" Seeing this, Madam Si wanted to step forward to help him, but was nailed to the spot by the governor's icy gaze.
There was no warmth in those eyes, only an unyielding hatred, and Madam Si froze instantly.
She knew that Lao Tao hated her to the core.
Yan Lan gently held his arm, her palm touching his arm and feeling his prominent knuckles. Suddenly, her nose tingled with emotion.
"Girl, leave."
The governor's lips moved very slightly, his voice as soft as the wind, yet it landed precisely in Yan Lan's ears, and only the two of them could hear it.
Yan Lan's heart skipped a beat, and she almost burst into tears.
He actually recognized him!
Even though she changed her voice and covered her face, her father's concern for his daughter was always hidden in his eyes and in the familiarity of her every move.
He let her go, in his own way, to protect her.
She nodded haphazardly, swallowing back the words that were on the tip of her tongue, and simply held him steady even more firmly.
Si Chu stood in front of the two, his face extremely grim.
The governor looked up at him, his gaze deep and unwavering. He stared at him silently for a few seconds, and Si Chu felt a sudden pang of fear. He could only reluctantly step aside.
Behind him, Bai Lin, Liu Jinnian, and the security guards who were following Si Chu all dared not stop him anymore.
The two walked slowly, exchanging few words throughout, yet every step conveyed a silent concern.
He was afraid that if he walked too fast, he would tire her out; she was afraid that if she held on too lightly, he would fall.
By the time they arrived outside the state capital, half an hour had passed. The media outside had already been cleared out, leaving only the research institute's car parked quietly there.
The governor released her hand, gently pushed her, and said only one word: "Go."
Yan Lan hesitated, unwilling to move.
The governor looked at her, his tone softening, carrying the tenderness only a father could have: "The children are all waiting for you."
Yan Lan then took a deep breath and hurriedly stuffed the pen into his hand.
That was the only memory she could keep.
She stepped into the car and looked back to see the imposing iron gate of the state capital slowly closing in front of her, as if to separate her and her father into two worlds once again.
Yan Lan's heart sank heavily.
But the next second, the sound of several car engines suddenly approached, moving at a speed that seemed to be breaking through the air.
It's Si Chu's men! He really isn't going to let this go; he still wants to arrest them. Yan Lan's eyes darkened, her fingers gripping the car door handle tightly. Just as she was trying to think of a solution, the scene outside the window made her freeze in shock…
Inside the mansion, as soon as the gate closed, Si Chu, accompanied by more than a dozen security guards, surrounded them, his face full of smug satisfaction.
"For the sake of our years of friendship, I originally wanted you to die without pain. Now that you know everything, just obediently sign this resignation letter."
The three large characters "Resignation Letter" on the document he handed over were particularly glaring.
According to Si Chu's plan, the governor would resign from all his posts today under the pretext of "feeling unwell and going abroad for recuperation." Starting tomorrow, he would become the acting governor and have full authority over the duties.
Si Chu stared at the governor, a cold smile playing on his lips, and tapped the document with his fingers: "Stop struggling, Singapore will be mine sooner or later."
He was already thinking about what to do with the governor after he signed the document.
The governor picked up his pen, his fingertips hovering over the paper, his gaze calm and undisturbed, as if he were merely looking at an insignificant notice.
Seeing this, Si Chu smiled even more triumphantly, even softening his breathing, waiting for the brush to fall and the dust to settle.
Just then, the security guard at the gate rushed in, his heels scraping the ground, his voice full of panic: "Secretary-General, a lot of cars have arrived at the gate, and the whole area is surrounded!"
Si Chu waved his hand impatiently, his tone full of disdain: "Aren't they just some media outlets that came because of the news? Tell them that the state government does not accept interviews, drive them away immediately, and detain anyone who dares to stay!"
"No, it's not the media!" The guard's face was pale, his knees were trembling, and he almost shouted.
"It's...it's a military vehicle! And the commanders of the army, navy, and air force—they've all come, and they've completely blocked the entrance with their men!"
"what?"
These words struck Si Chu like a thunderbolt, freezing him in place. The document in his hand fell to the ground with a "thud," the papers scattered, and the three words "resignation letter" stood out starkly on the floor.
He lunged forward and grabbed the guard by the collar, his eyes blazing with madness: "Did you see clearly? It was those three? Impossible! They've been retired from the front lines for ages!"
Before the guard could finish speaking, the gates of the prefecture creaked open again.
The wind outside, carrying the chill of the military vehicle, blew in. The first thing that caught the eye was three tall figures, their age a stark reminder of their age.
The Army Chief of Staff's hair was mostly white, and the silver strands at his temples were particularly noticeable in the light. The old military insignia on his shoulders were worn shiny.
The Chief of Naval Staff had several deep lines etched on his face, marks left by years of exposure to the wind and waves at sea. His long overcoat revealed a faded old military uniform. His steps were still steady, but slower than in his youth.
The Air Force Chief of Staff had fine lines around his eyes and was leaning on a cane.
That was a lingering effect from when he broke his leg while parachuting from a fighter jet to protect the governor years ago. Even though he was on crutches, his back was still straight.
When they saw the governor inside the door, their tense expressions instantly relaxed, and their eyes even reddened.
The Army Chief of Staff strode forward first, his voice slightly choked but still strong: "Old comrade! We're too late!"
The Navy Chief of Staff reached out and patted the governor's arm, his fingertips touching the knuckles beneath his hospital gown, his eyes reddening further: "You've suffered so much these past years! When we heard your greeting on the live broadcast, we knew you must be awake, so we rushed over without stopping!"
The Air Force Chief of Staff, leaning on his cane, slowly walked to the Governor's side, patted him on the shoulder, and spoke with deep concern.
"If we had told you earlier that you couldn't hold on, how could we have let you shoulder the burden alone? We defended Satellite Island together back then, and now it's time for us to protect you together!"
The governor looked at his three old subordinates and comrades, and the coldness in his eyes faded away, leaving only a long-lost warmth.
He raised his hand and patted the three hands in turn, his voice soft but full of warmth: "It's not late, it's good that you've come."
This scene, devoid of heated words, was filled with the tacit understanding and concern between old brothers, even bringing tears to the eyes of the surrounding soldiers.
Si Chu stood to the side, his face turning from deathly pale to ashen, and then completely bloodless.
He watched as the three chiefs of staff showed respect to the governor, and as the soldiers held the governor in awe, and only then did he belatedly realize what was going on.
He was so wrong. He thought he had everything under control and that the governor had long been sidelined, but he forgot that the governor's foundation was built by risking his life together with these old comrades.
He took a step back, trying to hide behind the security guard.
But the security guards had long lost their confidence and shrank back one by one; no one dared to protect him.
Si Chu slipped and almost fell to the ground. In a panic, she grabbed the table next to her and barely managed to keep her balance.
He watched as the governor was protected by the three chiefs of staff, and as the soldiers slowly surrounded him. His eyes were filled with fear, and his voice trembled: "You...you can't touch me! I'm about to become the acting governor!"
No one paid any attention to his shouts. The Army Chief of Staff gave him a cold glance and ordered the soldiers around him, "Detain him and his men!"
The soldiers immediately stepped forward. Si Chu tried to resist, but the two men held his arms down tightly. He struggled, his hair became disheveled, and his collar became crooked. His usual arrogance vanished, leaving him only in a sorry state.
He looked at the governor with eyes full of anger, but couldn't utter a single harsh word. He could only be dragged away by the soldiers, step by step, like a stray dog.
The governor stood there, watching Si Chu's disheveled figure, his gaze hardening once more. He turned to look at the three ministers, then glanced at Yan Lan's car outside, his voice steady and powerful: "I urge you all to protect Singapore, and also to protect my daughter."
The three chiefs of staff replied in unison, "Please rest assured, sir!"
The wind swept through the courtyard of the prefectural government, fluttering the corner of the prefectural governor's sick clothes and dispelling the gloom that had lingered for days.
At this moment, he is not a frail old man, but a king returning, supported by his old brothers, protecting his daughter's family, and determined to reclaim his rightful power and safeguard the land they once risked their lives to protect.
