Chapter 70 Job Assignment
Chapter 70 Job Assignment
No matter how strong the wind and rain, life must go on.
The rest period was three days. After lying down for three days, Lin Ziping barely recovered and was summoned to Lu Shuyin's room when he returned to the county government.
Lin Ziping met Xiao Jiazheng at the door. Their eyes met, and although Lin Ziping appeared calm, his hands were clenched tightly in his sleeves. Xiao Jiazheng also stared at Lin Ziping in a daze.
"Hey, you two are blocking the doorway and won't leave?" Bai Xin's words broke the strange atmosphere between Lin Ziping and Xiao Jiazheng.
Lin Ziping secretly breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Xiao Jiazheng, stop daydreaming. Lu Shuyin is still waiting."
"Oh, okay." Xiao Jiazheng quickly stepped aside, almost tripping over himself.
"Did your dad discipline you at home during your day off? Why are you so distracted today?" Bai Xin asked curiously.
Xiao Jia looked embarrassed: "I probably didn't get enough rest."
As they spoke, they arrived at Lu Shuyin's room. The three of them stopped, straightened their clothes, and went inside.
The officials of the Six Offices were sitting inside, with County Magistrate Feng in the seat that Lu Shuyin used to occupy.
The three men clasped their hands in a gesture of respect.
Magistrate Feng said, "You have all been in the county government for quite some time and have a basic understanding of how it operates. We have also seen what you three have done during this period. You should all know why we called you here today. If you have any special requests, please let us know in advance."
Lin Ziping, Xiao Jiazheng, and Bai Xin answered in unison.
County Magistrate Feng gestured to Lu Shuyin, who then opened the booklet in his hand and introduced the relevant information of each person, emphasizing their performance after arriving at the county government office.
"...In summary, the three of them performed excellently during their time in the county government." After finishing his explanation, Lu Shuyin handed the booklet to County Magistrate Feng.
County Magistrate Feng nodded, then turned his gaze to the others and asked, "Is there anything else that needs to be added to the Sixth Branch?"
The people from the sixth branch looked at each other, shook their heads, and remained silent.
"So, let me say a few words," Magistrate Feng cleared his throat. "Today, the Magistrate has arranged for me to summon everyone from the Six Offices. The reason is self-evident; Lu Shuyin has already clearly explained the situations of Lin Ziping, Xiao Jiazheng, and Bai Xin. All three are exceptional talents, rising stars of Fuchun. Considering their situations and the current state of the county government, the following arrangements have been made: Xiao Jiazheng will be assigned to the Workshop, Bai Xin to the Personnel Office, and Lin Ziping to the Military Office. They will take turns serving and learning for six months, after which further adjustments will be made. Do any of the Six Offices have any objections?"
The six men stood up, clasped their hands in a salute, and replied in unison, "We will follow the arrangements of the magistrate and Magistrate Feng."
Magistrate Feng then looked at Lin Ziping and the other two and asked, "And you?"
The three men clasped their hands in a salute and said, "We will follow the arrangements made by the County Magistrate and County Assistant Magistrate Feng."
Magistrate Feng nodded in satisfaction and said, "The three of you should go to the offices of public works, civil affairs, and military affairs first."
"Yes," Lin Ziping and the other two bowed and took their leave.
Lin Ziping was the last to leave Lu Shuyin's room, and turned around to close the door.
He hadn't walked far when he saw Bai Xin and Xiao Jiazheng waiting for him.
Bai Xin patted Lin Ziping on the shoulder, then walked to the room next to Lu Shuyin without saying a word.
"The barracks are next to the workshop, so go this way." Seeing Lin Ziping staring intently at Bai Xin's departing figure, Xiao Jiazheng reminded him.
Lin Ziping responded and followed Xiao Jiazheng out of the official residence.
Xiao Jiazheng looked at Lin Ziping with a hesitant expression throughout the journey.
Presumably referring to the incident where he encountered Jia Zheng on the street during his leave, Lin Ziping asked, "What's wrong, Brother Jia Zheng? You seem to have something to say."
"What are you doing during your time off?" Xiao Jiazheng asked.
"I'm cleaning the house." Lin Ziping looked puzzled.
"Didn't you go out?"
"No." Lin Ziping suddenly leaned closer and asked Xiao Jiazheng, "What's wrong?"
"N-nothing... I was just curious why you haven't gone out for a stroll since you just arrived in Fuchun. Yes, why haven't you gone out for a stroll?" Xiao Jiazheng seemed startled by Lin Ziping's sudden closeness, quickly taking a step back and stammering, "You...you...why did you suddenly get so close?"
Seeing this, Lin Ziping felt like teasing him and said in a serious tone, "It's nothing. You have some food stuck in your teeth. I'm just getting closer to check."
"You...you..." Xiao Jiazheng covered his mouth, his face turning bright red.
"I've confirmed it's true," Lin Ziping added casually.
Xiao Jiazheng stopped talking, covered his mouth, and ran away.
Watching the Xiao family flee in disarray, Lin Ziping couldn't help but laugh out loud. The resentment that had been building up for days seemed to dissipate at this moment.
"Young Lin, why are you standing here instead of going in?" Just as Lin Ziping was laughing happily, the voice of Inspector Chai suddenly came from behind him.
"Inspector Chai." Lin Ziping clasped his hands in a salute.
Inspector Chai stepped forward, patted Lin Ziping on the shoulder, and said with a smile, "Good, I didn't expect you to look so thin, but your lower body is quite stable. Have you been trained?"
"Inspector Chai is too kind. I'm just doing some random exercises with my family to keep myself healthy," Lin Ziping waved his hand.
"I'm a roughneck, so don't use all that fancy stuff when you talk to me. It sounds awkward to me," said Inspector Chai, his face showing displeasure.
Lin Ziping readily agreed, saying, "Yes, I understand."
Lin Ziping stepped aside, and then hurriedly followed Chai, the patrol officer, as he approached.
“Lin boy, follow me and do your job well. There’s no war on the border these days, and there’s not much to do in our barracks either. So you can go with the brothers from the fast squad to Fuchun and see what’s going on with the people.” Inspector Chai nodded in satisfaction when he saw Lin Ziping following him obediently. “If you know things clearly, it will be easier for you to do things later. Usually, it’s just me and Xiao Shi in this barracks. He’s from the strong squad and he only comes here occasionally.”
Lin Ziping followed Inspector Chai across the threshold of the barracks. Three rooms came into view. One was the usual office area; although somewhat messy, it was still passable. The other two were cluttered with random things, covered in cobwebs, and looked rather dilapidated. Lin Ziping was astonished. He usually spent most of his time in the clerk's office and the third shift's, only passing by the other rooms. He hadn't expected to find them so different after a closer look.
Seeing Lin Ziping in a daze, Inspector Chai said awkwardly, "I'm usually with Class Three at the training ground, and Xiao Shi doesn't come often, so I haven't cleaned much. You can tidy up here for the next couple of days."
In recent years, the country has been relatively peaceful, so the military post has basically become an idle department. In addition, Fuchun is not wealthy, and there are no inspections from higher authorities, so the post station is also practically useless. Seeing this, Lin Ziping realized that it would be difficult for him to get promoted. He might have to stay here until he dies. Oh well, he used to die at his work station. This retirement model is not bad.
Lin Ziping replied happily, "It is Inspector Chai."
Although somewhat bewildered by Lin Ziping's sudden change, Inspector Chai patted Lin Ziping on the shoulder with satisfaction: "Do a good job. I'll go check on the third shift. You stay here for the next couple of days, and then you can go over there too."
After saying that, he walked away with his hands behind his back.
