Chapter 99 Allocation
Chapter 99 Allocation
Having not stayed up all night for so long, Lin Ziping woke up in the morning to find his eyes swollen. He carefully examined his face in the bronze mirror. Although his eyebrows were shaped to resemble a man's and he was trying to imitate a man's posture, he was still different. Especially after his period started, he could clearly feel the changes in his body.
And then there was the time Xiao Jiazheng said he didn't have an Adam's apple. Remembering what he'd seen on TV before, where boiling pig skin and letting it solidify could achieve an effect similar to human skin, Lin Ziping tried several times but failed. He could only endure the strange looks from others and wear clothes with higher collars in this weather.
Thinking that Dai Yining's later misfortunes all stemmed from the revelation of her female identity, Lin Ziping felt a chill run down his spine. His current disguise was too clumsy and too easy to be recognized!
"Lin Ziping!"
The sudden increase in volume startled Lin Ziping. When he came to his senses, he saw that it was Lao Huang patting his shoulder and calling his name loudly.
"What are you thinking about? I've been calling you for ages and you haven't responded!"
"No, nothing," Lin Ziping stammered. "Uncle Huang, did you need something from me?"
Old Huang slapped his forehead and said, "Look at my memory! Magistrate Feng is looking for you."
"Is Magistrate Feng looking for me?" Lin Ziping looked at Old Huang in confusion.
"Yes, he's waiting for you at the barracks. Shi Yong has been looking for you everywhere." Old Huang lowered his voice and asked, "What have you been up to lately?"
Lin Ziping looked at Lao Huang with a blank expression.
Seeing this, Old Huang sighed and said, "I see Shi Yong doesn't look well. Be careful when you go to see Magistrate Feng."
After thanking Lao Huang, Lin Ziping headed towards the barracks.
With a nervous heart, I entered the barracks and saw County Magistrate Feng sitting at the head of the table, with Inspector Chai standing to the side.
"Greetings, Magistrate Feng and Inspector Chai." Lin Ziping clasped his hands in greeting.
Magistrate Feng opened his eyes, looked Lin Ziping up and down, and after a while said, "Lin Ziping, how long have you been at the Fuchun County Government?"
Lin Ziping raised his head slightly and saw that Magistrate Feng's face was calm. He then secretly glanced at Inspector Chai and said, "Reporting to Magistrate Feng, it has been more than half a year."
County Magistrate Feng nodded, looked at Inspector Chai, and said nothing.
"Lin Ziping has indeed been in Fuchun for more than half a year. He has made great contributions in catching bandits in Maomao Mountain and in solving the case of the husband's murder this time," said Inspector Chai, bowing.
"You're quite young." County Magistrate Feng smiled slightly. "Since that's the case, and you have such a capable person under your command, you shouldn't hold back. It just so happens that the County Magistrate has arranged for someone to supervise the construction in Xinping Village. I think Lin Ziping is quite suitable. Would you like to go?"
Lin Ziping glanced at County Magistrate Feng, then at Inspector Chai, and sighed inwardly. "These personnel changes must have been arranged long ago, right?" he thought. He recalled his own job transfer when he first started working. His superior had asked for his opinion, and he had naively offered a whole host of suggestions. Only later did he realize that these matters had already been decided; the superior's inquiry, while seemingly a sign of respect, was actually just a notification.
"This humble servant will go through fire and water without hesitation!" Lin Ziping said firmly, clasping his hands in a fist salute, pulling back his thoughts.
"Hahaha, very good! He's indeed a young man! Inspector Chai, you must mentor him well," Magistrate Feng laughed heartily.
Inspector Chai nodded in agreement.
Lin Ziping put on a professional smile.
"Then you should pack your things and head to Xinping Village the day after tomorrow." County Magistrate Feng decided Lin Ziping's fate in just a few words.
"Yes," Lin Ziping said, clasping his hands in a fist salute.
As he left the barracks, Inspector Chai glanced at Lin Ziping with a meaningful look in his eyes.
"What? You're going to Xinping Village to supervise the construction?" Old Huang looked at Lin Ziping in surprise.
Lin Ziping nodded. He thought to himself that he had been at the Fuchun County government office for more than half a year, and he still didn't know everyone there. The only person who could give him advice was probably Lao Huang. Although Lao Huang sometimes had his own thoughts, he hadn't caused him any trouble so far. Moreover, Lao Huang had been at the Fuchun County government office for quite some time and knew a lot. So after returning to his shift, he told Lao Huang about his trip to Xinping Village.
"Xiao Lin, tell your uncle honestly what you've done," Old Huang said, pulling Lin Ziping aside. "Otherwise, why would we have arranged for you to supervise the construction in Xinping Village? You saw what Xinping Village is like last time, didn't you?"
When Lin Ziping heard Lao Huang say this, he recalled the last time he went to Xinping Village to find Mo Bani, and then he remembered the meaningful look in Chai Xunli's eyes. He realized that it was not a good job for County Magistrate Feng to ask him to supervise the construction.
Thinking back on my recent interactions with Magistrate Feng, could it be because of the plague incident in Maomao Village?
Lin Ziping hesitantly recounted how he had spoken to County Magistrate Feng and County Magistrate Wei about the rising prices of rice and the potential outbreak of disease in Maomao Village.
After listening, Old Huang couldn't help but rub his forehead, looking quite disappointed, and said, "Lin Ziping, are you really stupid or just pretending? The county government sends people out to patrol every now and then. Do you think everyone is just going through the motions and didn't even notice such a big thing happening?"
"I...I..." Lin Ziping's face turned pale; he hadn't thought that much at the time.
“Everyone is pretending not to know, but you still brought it up. And what about the rice shops outside? How can you be sure that the price was set by the rice shops?” Old Huang continued.
"This..." Lin Ziping was struck dumb, and after opening his mouth, he still said, "So no one cares, they just turn a blind eye and pretend to be deaf and dumb?"
Old Huang shook his head: "Xiao Lin, you've only just arrived. You need to understand that some things are beyond our control!"
"So the story about Maomao Village is true, or even more serious than the rumors outside?" Lin Ziping murmured.
Old Huang looked around and said in a low voice, "The people inside can't come out anymore; they've all been driven to Cat Mountain."
Lin Ziping stared wide-eyed at Lao Huang, thinking to himself, "Those are human lives!"
"Human life is as worthless as grass, don't think too much about it." Old Huang patted Lin Ziping on the shoulder and said, "The adults are all focused on Zezhou now, otherwise they wouldn't have only sent you to Xinping Village. Go find Inspector Chai, he's more familiar with Xinping Village."
Lin Ziping forced a smile: "Uncle Huang, you want me to go and supervise the construction? What are they planning to do in Xinping Village?"
"The county magistrate thought the road from Zezhou to our place was in serious damage, so he ordered Xinping Village to quarry stones in preparation for renovation. What if the officials from Zezhou come to Fuchun?" Old Huang explained. "Xinping Village is full of people who fled famine. The condition for them to settle down was that they would do anything the government needed. So, the people of Xinping Village did all the work, such as quarrying, road repair, and city wall repair."
Road repair? The whole village is sick and no one cares, but they're in the mood to repair roads to welcome potential leaders. Human life is truly worthless.
Suppressing his thoughts, Lin Ziping clasped his hands and said, "I understand, thank you for your guidance, Uncle Huang."
Old Huang said, "Don't be so impulsive next time. Think things through more. Don't talk about the matter of Maomao Village and the rice shop. The county magistrate has arranged for you to go to Xinping Village, so this matter should be over for now. Do a good job when you get there."
Lin Ziping nodded in agreement.
