Chapter 1944 Identification
Chapter 1944 Identification
Chapter 1944 Identification
“I remember, I remember, I remember now,” my grandson Shinta said. “I saw a special intelligence briefing when I was in Nanjing. Shen Xi was a close confidant of Ke Zhijiang, the former head of the Qingdao station of the Military Intelligence Bureau.”
“Yes.” Li Cuiqun nodded. “After Ke Zhijiang abandoned the darkness and surrendered to Nanjing, most of the original personnel of the Qingdao station surrendered. Those who were stubborn were all executed. Only a few, such as Shen Xi, the deputy leader of the telegraph group, escaped the net.”
As he spoke, he looked at my grandson Shinta and asked, "May I ask, 'Chief of the 'Tent', what are these photos?"
“A few days ago, a horrific violent attack occurred in Nanjing,” Shinta Azuma said. “Unidentified violent individuals attacked an academic team from Imperial Kyoto University who were in Nanjing for academic research at the Shimonoseki Wharf. These people were all thugs killed by my Special Higher Police.”
“I see.” Li Cuiqun’s expression turned serious. “After Shen Xi fled, his whereabouts were unknown. This time, he actually went so far as to launch a vicious attack on your country’s unarmed academic team. His behavior is simply outrageous.”
He said to my grandson, Shinta, "Only the Chongqing puppet regime would do something like this, attacking innocent academics."
……
"So, Director Li believes that Chongqing was responsible for this attack?" Shinta my grandson asked.
“After Shen Xi and others fled from Qingdao, their whereabouts are unknown,” Li Cuiqun said. “However, based on the information we have and reasonable inferences from the actions of the Military Intelligence Bureau, it is highly likely that Shen Xi secretly returned to Chongqing to report to Dai Chunfeng about the changes in Qingdao.”
“But Shen Xi appeared in this attack on the Shimonoseki docks,” my grandson Shinta said. “Given the intelligence and professional expertise of the Special Agent Headquarters…”
"May I ask, Director Li?" Shinta Azuma said with a smile, "Does this mean that this attack was personally instigated by Dai Chunfeng in Chongqing?"
Ce Na Niang.
How would we know?!
Li Cuiqun looked at my grandson Shen Tai, cursing inwardly.
He lacked knowledge of what happened at Xiaguan Wharf in Nanjing. If my grandson, Shinta, hadn't come to him, he wouldn't have known the identities of the people killed in the Xiaguan Wharf incident.
The Special Higher Police should be the one with the most inside information about this matter, but my grandson Shinta came to ask for his opinion, and he was furious.
……
"Without the necessary intelligence support, it is impossible to make an effective and accurate judgment," Li Cuiqun said, shaking his head.
“That’s a real shame,” my grandson Shinta said. “I still have faith in the professionalism of the Special Agent Headquarters. If there is any further intelligence, please have Director Li instruct his subordinates to report it to us promptly.”
"Of course," Li Cuiqun cursed inwardly, but said with a smile on his face.
He looked at my grandson Shinta and continued, “'Chief 'Wo,' I have some important official business to attend to here. I’ve arranged for Section Chief Dong to accompany you. If you need anything, feel free to ask Section Chief Dong.”
"That's fine then." My grandson Shinta smiled and nodded. "Thank you for your help and cooperation, Director Li."
"It's nothing, you're too kind, 'Tent' Room Chief," Li Cuiqun said politely with a smile.
After Dong Zhengguo led my grandson Shen Tai away, Li Cuiqun snorted coldly and spat a mouthful of phlegm into the spittoon, "My grandson, having a grandson like you is bad luck."
……
"Section Chief Dong, thank you for today." My grandson Shen Tai followed Dong Zhengguo to the VIP reception room and thanked Dong Zhengguo.
"It's my duty," Dong Zhengguo quickly replied with a smile.
He was on high alert.
My grandson, Shinta, the head of the intelligence office of the Shanghai Special Higher Police, actually thanked him for the first time, and in such a mild manner. This unusual attitude made him highly vigilant.
“Chief Dong was involved in the previous operation to suppress the Kuomintang’s Qingdao station, and he is quite familiar with the situation there,” said my grandson Shinta. “I would also like to ask Chief Dong to take a look at the other photos and see if these people are any of the Qingdao station’s stragglers.”
“‘The’ office director.” Dong Zhengguo took the photo, flipped through it, shook his head, and said, “I don’t recognize anyone else.”
He explained to my grandson, Shen Tai, "The reason we know Shen Xi's appearance is because Shen Xi is one of the important mid-to-high-level personnel at Qingdao Station. As for the other grassroots personnel at Qingdao Station, it is very difficult to know their physical characteristics."
"Many people from the Military Intelligence Bureau's Qingdao station surrendered before. What I want to know is, did all of these people stay in the north?" My grandson Shinta frowned and asked, "Didn't anyone follow you back to Shanghai from Qingdao?"
“There is such a person,” Dong Zhengguo said to my grandson Shen Tai after thinking for a moment. “His name is Lai Shangrong. He used to be a group leader in the intelligence section of the Kuomintang’s Qingdao station. Because his ancestral home is Chongming, he went back with me recently.”
“Lai Shangrong?” My grandson Shinta frowned. “This name sounds familiar. Could it be that Lai Shangrong’s identity is actually something else? Is he an important secret figure in the Kuomintang’s Qingdao station?”
“Well, Lai Shangrong is just a minor leader at Qingdao Station, nothing special,” Dong Zhengguo said, shaking his head. “As for why the name ‘Wo’ sounds familiar to you, Chief, perhaps it’s because…”
He looked at my grandson Shinta, smiled and said, "Perhaps it's because the 'Tent' Director is knowledgeable and has a good memory, and has read 'The Story of the Stone'."
My grandson Shinta was slightly taken aback at first, then suddenly realized, "No wonder he felt the name was somewhat familiar."
……
“I want to meet this Lai Shangrong,” my grandson Shinta said. “I want to arrange for him to identify these photos.”
After confirming Shen Xi's identity, my grandson had a guess. He strongly suspected that the other dead people in the photos might be remnants of the Qingdao Station, and even did not rule out that most of them were remnants of the Qingdao Station.
Because these people had a very strong will to resist, almost to the point of being daredevils, and based on his observation that the others had great respect for Shen Xi, he tended to suspect that some of them were Shen Xi's old subordinates from the Qingdao station.
"Does the 'Tent' chief suspect that there are other people among the original Qingdao station personnel?" Dong Zhengguo immediately understood what my grandson Shinta meant, and he asked.
“We can’t rule out that possibility.” My grandson Shinta nodded. “Please have Section Chief Dong call Lai Shangrong over. I want to see him identify him in person.”
“Okay.” Dong Zhengguo nodded. “‘Tent’ Room Leader, please have a seat. I’ll make the arrangements.”
"Thank you for your trouble." My grandson Shinta smiled and nodded.
……
"Where's Team Leader Cao?" Dong Zhengguo asked one of his subordinates.
"Team Leader Cao should be doing exercises in the backyard right now," the subordinate said after thinking for a moment.
"Doing exercises?" Dong Zhengguo asked, puzzled.
"Section Chief, Team Leader Cao has taken a liking to 'Tai Chi exercises' these past few days," the subordinate said. "He practices Tai Chi exercises whenever he has free time."
“This Cao Yu.” Dong Zhengguo shook his head. He suspected that Cao Yu was trying to indirectly get closer to Cheng Qianfan.
He couldn't help but shake his head and chuckle as he imagined that half-ear doing Tai Chi.
"Go and invite Team Leader Cao to my office. Tell him I have something urgent to discuss with him immediately," Dong Zhengguo said.
"Understood." The subordinate replied and quickly ran to the dormitory area in the backyard.
……
"Lai Shangrong?" Cao Yu looked at Dong Zhengguo in surprise. "Brother Dong, why did you suddenly think of asking about this coward?"
Dong Zhengguo looked Cao Yu up and down and was amazed to see that Cao Yu was dressed in thin clothes and had fine beads of sweat on his forehead.
It seems that the Tai Chi exercises that Minister Chu has been advocating for have some merit.
"Lai Shangrong, a coward?" he asked Cao Yu. "What kind of statement is that?"
“Brother, you don’t know this,” Cao Yu chuckled and said, “The reason this guy wanted to return to Shanghai from Qingdao wasn’t just because his ancestral home was Chongming, but because he was afraid of dying.”
“He was worried that if he stayed in Qingdao, he would be assassinated by the Military Intelligence Bureau, so he thought he would hide back in his hometown and not attract attention,” Cao Yu said with a smile. “Lai Shangrong was terrified by the several assassination attempts carried out by the Military Intelligence Bureau’s Shanghai branch against Japanese and defectors. He was afraid that the Military Intelligence Bureau would come after him.”
Dong Zhengguo shook his head. Not to mention that Lai Shangrong was just a small fry and not even on the Kuomintang's assassination list, the fact that he secretly returned to Shanghai meant that the Kuomintang's intelligence department probably didn't even know that this former team leader of the Qingdao station's intelligence section was now working at No. 76 Jessfield Road.
……
“Not only that, this guy is now known for his laziness under my command,” Cao Yu said. “Especially for field missions, he will try to avoid any dangerous situations. He has become a well-known patient in the infirmary. If there is a mission he can’t avoid, he will hide in the crowd and make sure to protect himself.”
“Now that you mention it, I remember,” Dong Zhengguo said, slapping his forehead. “I’ve heard of a brother who was called ‘Old Turtle’ before. So that’s him.”
“Actually, it’s called ‘Lai the Turtle.’ After Lai Shangrong heard that, he got into a fight with someone, and after that, everyone called him ‘Old Turtle,’” Cao Yu nodded and said.
He ordered his men to summon Lai Shangrong, and then asked Dong Zhengguo, "Brother, you haven't said what you want with Lai Shangrong yet?"
"Here's what happened," Dong Zhengguo then concisely explained the whole story to Cao Yu.
……
"Shen Xi is dead?" Cao Yu exclaimed in surprise, his tone tinged with a hint of joy.
"He is indeed dead." Dong Zhengguo nodded. "I've seen the photo; it should be Shen Xi."
“You’re known for your ability to recognize people. Since you say it’s Shen Xi, then it’s pretty much true.” Cao Yu nodded, let out a satisfied sigh, and clicked his tongue, saying, “This guy ran away from Qingdao, but I didn’t expect him to still fall in the end.”
It was at this moment that Lai Shangrong was brought in.
He had a dazed look in his eyes and seemed completely listless.
Dong Zhengguo then knew that this man was terrified.
“Come with me,” Dong Zhengguo said. “The Japanese will be asking you questions. Tell them what you know, without any deception or exaggeration.”
As he spoke, he stared intently at Lai Shangrong, "Do you understand?"
"Understood, understood." Lai Shangrong first looked at Cao Yu, but Cao Yu scolded him, "Just answer whatever Section Chief Dong asks you," before he hurriedly replied.
"Brother Cao, why don't you come along too?" Dong Zhengguo said with a smile. "Lai Shangrong is your man, so it'll be good for you to come along as well."
"I knew it wouldn't be good news for you to call me, brother." Cao Yu shook his head with a wry smile.
Dong Zhengguo laughed heartily. He understood what Cao Yu meant. Indeed, for people like them, meeting the Japanese was rarely a pleasant task.
……
Lai Shangrong looked at Cao Yu helplessly, then at Dong Zhengguo, then at the Japanese in front of him, and finally at his own team leader, looking completely dumbfounded.
"The officer told you to identify the person, just look at the photo," Cao Yu cursed angrily. "The photo won't kill you."
"Hey." Lai Shangrong then took the photos, held them in his hands, and carefully looked through them.
My grandson Shinta frowned and looked at Dong Zhengguo and Cao Yu.
"After surrendering, he was assassinated by Kuomintang agents, but he fought back decisively and escaped death," Dong Zhengguo explained to my grandson, Shen Tai, with a smile. "Perhaps the terrifying experience of facing death has traumatized him, and now..."
He pointed to his head, "My reaction time is a bit slow."
My grandson Shinta frowned.
“It won’t affect the identification of the photo.” Dong Zhengguo knew what my grandson Shen was worried about, so he quickly said, “Perhaps because he was assassinated by the Military Intelligence Bureau, he hates the Military Intelligence Bureau even more.”
My grandson Shinta then nodded.
……
“I…I know this person,” Lai Shangrong said, holding up one photo after looking at all the pictures.
"Who is this person?" my grandson Shinta asked immediately.
“Zhang Xiaonao,” Lai Shangrong said. “I’ve met him before.”
"What position does Zhang Xiaonuo hold at the Qingdao station of the Military Intelligence Bureau?" my grandson Shinta immediately asked.
"What's his identity?" Lai Shangrong thought for a moment, then shook his head and said, "I don't know, he's probably just a small fry."
"How did you two meet?" Dong Zhengguo suddenly asked from the side.
"That's right, it happened once when I was on a mission with the section chief," Lai Shangrong said.
My grandson, Shen Tai, asked a few more questions, but seeing that Lai Shangrong didn't know much, he had no choice but to give up.
……
"'The 'Tent' Director, it now appears that the one who perpetrated the massacre of your country's academic team at Xiaguan Wharf was none other than the Kuomintang agents led by Shen Xi," Dong Zhengguo said to my grandson, Shen Tai.
“I have a hunch,” my grandson Shinta said. “Most of the other dead people in these photos are likely to be survivors of the Kuomintang’s Qingdao station.”
Upon hearing what my grandson Shinta said, Dong Zhengguo fell into deep thought.
My grandson Shinta noticed that Cao Yu seemed to want to say something but hesitated, so he looked at Cao Yu and said, "Team Leader Cao, please speak your mind."
“I just find it hard to understand.” Cao Yu carefully considered his words before saying, “According to the director, the group that attacked Xiaguan Wharf this time should be the action group led by Shen Xi, and most of the members are remnants of the Kuomintang’s Qingdao station.”
He frowned slightly and continued, "This is a bit illogical."
Cao Yu said to my grandson Shen Tai, "Logically speaking, Shen Xi and his group are the only remaining remnants of the Kuomintang's Qingdao Station. They can be considered the last remaining seeds of the station. In their words, they are the sparks for the reconstruction of the Qingdao Station. There's no reason to use these sparks as a suicide squad."
