Chapter 1987 The Foolish Hattori

Chapter 1987 The Foolish Hattori

“I understand,” Hattori Shinji said. “Based on the timeline, Su Zhe should have already infiltrated Cheng Qianfan’s office by then.”

"In other words," he said thoughtfully, looking at Oda Hideto, "at that time, Cheng Qianfan was most likely already being held hostage by Su Zhe."

“That’s how it is.” Hattori Shinji clapped his hands. “Cheng Qianfan was taken hostage, so when his men knocked on the door, he didn’t dare to give a warning signal and instead scolded his men away.”

Then he saw Hidetoshi Oda smiling at him.

……

“Oda-kun, is there a problem with my analysis?” Hattori Shinji asked.

“Logically speaking, there’s nothing wrong with it,” said Hideto Oda. “However, in my opinion, what you just said didn’t sound like an analysis, but rather like an explanation that Cheng Qianfan gave me when I was questioning him.”

“That’s a reasonable explanation,” Hattori Shinji said. “I was just thinking about the detail you mentioned, trying to figure out why this would happen and what the reason is.”

"Hattori-kun," Oda Hideto looked at Hattori Shinji intently and said, "please remember one thing."

“Please speak, Mr. Oda,” said Shinji Hattori.

“When we focus on a detail that interests us, it’s good to think about it and ponder it,” Hideto Oda said. “But remember, we shouldn’t offer explanations to respond to questions.”

“Even if we have thought about it and imagined possible explanations, we must immediately put those thoughts aside,” he told Shinji Hattori. “Only in this way can we ensure that our judgment is not influenced by our own thinking as much as possible.”

……

Hattori Shinji opened his mouth, he understood some of what Oda Hideto had said, but after thinking about it, there seemed to be some parts he didn't understand.

Akima Yokoyama snorted and glared at Shinji Hattori. "Say what you have to say."

"I feel like I understand, but there are still some things I don't understand," Hattori Shinji said. "Isn't it right to analyze more, to think about all the possibilities?"

He looked at Hideto Oda and asked, "That's how Instructor Kurofuji taught us back then."

“It’s not that you’re not allowed to analyze and think about various possibilities,” Hideto Oda explained. “In fact, it’s right to analyze more and think about as many possibilities as possible.”

“What I mean is, we shouldn’t let the possibilities we come up with influence our judgment,” he said to Hattori Shinji with a serious expression. “The purpose of our thinking is to analyze problems and avoid creating blind spots in our thinking.”

“However, our analysis cannot be used to convince ourselves of our own doubts,” Hideto Oda said.

"I understand." Under Akima Yokoyama's somewhat displeased gaze, Hattori Shinji showed a look of sudden realization. "I've learned something."

Hideto Oda frowned slightly. His intuition told him that Shinji Hattori didn't seem very smart and didn't seem to really understand.

……

"Are you doubting Cheng Qianfan?" Yokoyama Akima suddenly asked Oda Hideto.

“There’s no real suspicion,” Hideto Oda said, shaking his head.

“In fact, when there is a case or something happens, I habitually suspect any of the parties involved,” Hideto Oda told Akima Yokoyama. “In some cases, I will assume that people or things that seem impossible to be problematic to outsiders are the problem, and then analyze based on that assumption.”

"Of course, such assumptions are mostly proven to be meaningless, since it is a kind of unconventional thinking." He smiled and said to Yokoyama Akima, "So, my analysis of Cheng Qianfan's various behaviors does not mean that I have any substantial doubts about Cheng Qianfan. It is just a judgment or conclusion that I have drawn based on my habit of unconventional analysis."

When Hideto Oda was giving a long speech, Shinji Hattori would pretend to be thinking seriously, and would nod from time to time to show his approval.

……

"Hattori, what do you think of Oda's statement?" Yokoyama Akima asked Hattori Shinji.

“That seems to make some sense,” Hattori Shinji said, stroking his chin thoughtfully.

“Tell me your thoughts in detail,” Akima Yokoyama said.

Hattori Shinji was taken aback.

"Major," Hideto Oda suddenly said.

Akima Yokoyama frowned slightly as he looked at Hideto Oda.

“If I’m not mistaken, Number 76 and the Special Police Department should have already started contacting each other, or are negotiating,” Hideto Oda said. “I think Hattori-kun could keep an eye on the situation from the sidelines.”

As he spoke, he looked at Hattori Shinji.

"Major, I'll go get busy now?" Hattori Shinji immediately said to Yokoyama Akima.

After a moment's thought, Yokoyama Akima immediately understood:

Hattori, that stupid guy, is pretending to know everything. He didn't understand what Oda meant at all.

Foolish Hattori!

……

"Go." Yokoyama Akima glanced at Hattori Shinji, then added with concern, "Remember, don't show up on Xuehuali Road today. Just secretly have someone keep an eye on that area."

"Don't worry, Major, I know what to do," Hattori Shinji nodded and said.

……

“Hattori-kun is actually a pretty good officer in terms of execution.” Oda Hideto said after thinking for a moment when he saw Yokoyama Akima frown.

"Just say he's a brainless idiot," Yokoyama Akima said.

Hideto Oda did not respond to that.

“Continue,” said Akima Yokoyama.

“I’m basing my analysis on that unconventional method,” Hideto Oda said. “Cheng Qianfan’s telling his subordinates to ‘get lost’ is problematic.”

He thought for a moment and said to Yokoyama Akima, "Of course, according to what Hattori just said, Cheng Qianfan can actually give a reasonable explanation. However, based on my analysis, I have temporarily blocked these possible explanations. Cheng Qianfan's explanation must be answered by Cheng Qianfan himself in order to have real reference and analytical value."

“I understand what you mean.” Akima Yokoyama nodded, then looked at Hideto Oda and said with a wry smile, “Oda.”

"Hai."

……

“Your analysis and these theoretical terms will indeed be a bit difficult for someone with a less sharp mind to understand,” said Akima Yokoyama.

"Because of your exceptional wisdom, Major, there's no need to worry that you won't understand. That's why I subconsciously spoke according to my own habits," Oda Hideto quickly said.

Akima Yokoyama burst into laughter, "I still remember the first time I met you, I thought you were a bookworm who'd gone mad from reading too much, and now..."

He nodded. "I'm very pleased with your progress."

……

"I plan to find some time to meet with Cheng Qianfan," Oda Hideto said thoughtfully.

“Okay.” Yokoyama Akima nodded.

“The more I think about Cheng Qianfan, the more interesting I find him,” said Oda Hideto.

"His grandfather was a Kuomintang elder, his parents were so-called martyrs of the Kuomintang, and he himself was a student at the Kuomintang Central Army Officer School, but he had to drop out because his grandfather was sick and needed care."

"This person started as a lowly policeman in the French Concession, and rose step by step from the bottom to become the deputy chief inspector of the central district of the French Concession."

“He came from the East Asia Tongwen School, so he was naturally close to the Empire. He had friends in the Special Higher Police and our Military Police Headquarters, and even had connections with the Consulate General. At the same time, he also had a natural background with the Wang Jingwei regime in Nanjing.”

"Furthermore, Cheng Qianfan also has influence and connections within the Green Gang."

As he spoke, Hideto Oda laughed and said, "A guy like this, who has connections with all sorts of forces and can be described as a master of social maneuvering, makes me subconsciously think, if such a person has something to do with him, that would be very interesting. His infiltration was too successful."

"Cheng Qianfan is a Special Higher Police agent," Yokoyama Akima said, looking at Oda Hideto, who was speaking eloquently and seemed to be engrossed in his self-analysis. "He is an Imperial agent."

……

"Did the Special Higher Police secretly recruit Cheng Qianfan all along?" Oda Hideto said, then suddenly stopped, staring at Yokoyama Akima in astonishment. "Major, you mean..."

“Yes, Cheng Qianfan is an Imperial agent,” Yokoyama Akima said. “His identity is a secret of the Special Higher Police; even within the Military Police, only a few people know it.”

He said to Hideto Oda, "Yes, you heard right, he is one of the Empire's own people, an Imperial agent."

"How is this possible?" Hideto Oda exclaimed in amazement. "It's unbelievable."

He pondered for a moment, then asked Yokoyama Akima, "The only male heir of the Cheng family in Jiangshan, Quzhou, who has been the only male heir for three generations, is actually one of the empire's own people."

As he spoke, his expression suddenly turned serious, and he asked Yokoyama Akima in a low voice, "Major, is it Project Seed?"

"You actually know about the 'Seed Project'?" Akima Yokoyama asked, somewhat surprised.

"By chance, a senior student who was involved mentioned it briefly," said Hideto Oda.

……

Akima Yokoyama looked at Hideto Oda.

Hideto Oda came from an ordinary background, but this former "bookworm" was actually very smart and was well-liked by his seniors and instructors. Within the academic circle, he had a network of connections and relationships that far exceeded those of ordinary people.

Finally, Akima Yokoyama simply nodded and did not dwell on the matter further.

“The ‘Seed’ Project is an absolute secret of the Empire. Don’t mention it again,” Yokoyama Akima said.

"Hai."

“I don’t know the specifics of Cheng Qianfan’s situation; it’s a secret from the Special Higher Police. However, I can say with some certainty that he should be unrelated to the ‘Seed’ project,” said Akima Yokoyama.

"The information we have about Kentaro Miyazaki, apart from that identity, is actually not much," Akima Yokoyama said. "The Special Higher Police's infiltrators are their secret."

……

“That makes it even more interesting,” Oda Hideto said thoughtfully.

Suddenly, a strange light flashed in his eyes, "Could it be a case of 'substituting one thing for another'?"

Akima Yokoyama looked surprised. "Although we don't have a concrete understanding of the inside story, that's how we analyzed and judged it."

Hideto Oda noticed the "we" mentioned by Akima Yokoyama, but he wisely refrained from asking any questions about it.

“Kentaro Miyazaki,” Akima Yokoyama said, “this is Cheng Qianfan’s true identity.”

“Kentaro Miyazaki.” Hideto Oda nodded. “I knew Cheng Qianfan had an imperial name, Kazuo Miyazaki. I never imagined he was actually from the Empire and that his surname was Miyazaki.”

With that, Hideto Oda sighed, "In that case, all my analysis and assumptions just now are meaningless."

He gave a wry smile and continued, "That's exactly what I was saying. My unconventional analysis is often useless, and can even lead to some hilarious mistakes."

……

“No, no, no,” Yokoyama Akima said. “I’m telling you Cheng Qianfan’s true identity for no other purpose than to state a fact. In other words, as the Chinese saying goes, to avoid getting bogged down in details.”

“However, I just thought about it.” Seeing Oda Hideto frowning in thought, he continued, “You can continue to analyze and investigate according to your own line of thinking.”

“I don’t understand.” Hideto Oda shook his head.

“It was your theory that you just told Hattori Shinji that inspired me,” Yokoyama Akima said. “You can continue this investigation and see how Cheng Qianfan responds.”

“Of course.” He smiled and said, “Once the investigation reaches a certain point, Cheng Qianfan’s disguise will be stripped away, and the identity of Miyazaki Kentaro will come into contact with you. Then you can see how Miyazaki Kentaro responds.”

“Although I still don’t quite understand, I think I understand it a little better now,” said Hideto Oda.

“Go do it,” Yokoyama Akima said. “Keep it a secret.”

“Hai,” said Hideto Oda.

His intuition told him that Major Yokoyama seemed to be hiding something from him.

But what exactly is it, and why is it being kept secret?

……

"How's the investigation into Pan Qingyu's case going?" Yokoyama Akima asked.

“There’s no further progress for now,” Hideto Oda said. “Kishun doesn’t have any more information.”

He told Akima Yokoyama, "Right now, we can only proceed step by step from the list of suspects, trying to get closer to our target."

"Don't be impatient," Yokoyama Akima cautioned. "If our judgment is correct, this mysterious person is likely an infiltrator with a legitimate identity, or even a law enforcement officer, who has infiltrated our or the Wang Jingwei regime."

“Such an infiltrator is quite successful,” said Akima Yokoyama. “Such an opponent deserves our utmost caution and patience.”

“Hai,” said Hideto Oda, then he seemed to fall into some kind of thought.

Akima Yokoyama did not disturb Hideto Oda's thoughts.

Instead, they waited for Hideto Oda to come out of his contemplative state before asking the question.

……

“The major just mentioned that the undercover agents have legal identities, and even the guise of law enforcement,” Hideto Oda said. “That gave me a sudden inspiration.”

“Tell me about it,” said Akima Yokoyama.

“I’m reminded of Su Zhe, the one who was chased by the 76th Division, was shot, infiltrated the SWAT team, tried to assassinate Cheng Qianfan but failed, and then chose to commit suicide,” said Oda Hideto.

"I know Su Zhe, there's no need to explain so much," Yokoyama Akima said helplessly.

“I express myself in a habitual way, which helps me organize my thoughts,” Hideto Oda said.

“Go on,” Yokoyama Akima said, shaking his head.

“Su Zhe used to be the assistant to Jin Keming, the chief inspector of the French Concession Central Police Station. He was an enforcer in the French Concession Police Station, and in some ways, that was a very high position,” said Oda Hideto.

Akima Yokoyama nodded slightly, signaling Hideto Oda to continue.

“I’m suddenly very interested in how Su Zhe got into the French Concession and how he became the assistant to the chief inspector,” said Oda Hideto. “I’m even interested in studying Su Zhe’s entire life trajectory and resume.”

He told Akima Yokoyama, “I think this is a very good subject of study, and it is of great reference value for my research on how the underground party of the Red Army successfully infiltrated.”
