Chapter 475 The True Abyss (Part 3)
Chapter 475 The True Abyss (Part 3)
At night, most people had fallen asleep, but Conan woke up Sera Masumi, and the two hid behind a big rock and whispered to each other.
"Sera, I think there's something wrong with that archivist."
"How to say?"
"First, besides us, he's the only person in this world without any signs of lignification. I've confirmed this with the cyborg. Secondly, the red glass ball around his neck seems to contain mycelium, and the flute he took out earlier also has mycelium. So, he's definitely not just an ordinary researcher."
Sera Masumi now began to reflect on the archivist's actions during the trip. "Speaking of which, wasn't he a little too nice to the guide? Like he was doting on his sister, or even his daughter?"
"In short, he's extremely suspicious. We need to find a way to get him to explain himself before we head to the deepest point tomorrow. Otherwise, this journey will inevitably be filled with hidden dangers."
"What hidden danger?" The archivist's voice suddenly sounded next to the two's hiding place.
The two turned around and saw the archivist staring at them intently with a gloomy face. "Who on earth are you? You suddenly appeared in the wasteland without any signs of woodification. Even your clothes seem to be from ancient times. Could it be..."
"Are you from a more distant past?"
The archivist's words stunned the two who were originally on guard. Conan was even more incredulous: "Are you from the past?"
The Archivist didn't deny it. "Yes, I made a deal with a god from the abyss, which allowed me to travel to this distant future with the help of a time machine. In my original time and space, mycelial disease broke out, leaving countless people homeless. Even my daughter was infected."
"So you came to the future to find a way to cure the mycelial disease?"
"And you've been staring at the guide girl because she looks like your daughter?"
Now Conan and Sera Masumi understood why the archiver's behavior was a little strange. Everything he did was to save the past world, or to save his past daughter.
"I don't know where you are from, but I sincerely hope that you won't disrupt tomorrow's operation. The truth is at hand, and that may be my only hope." The archiver said earnestly.
"We understand."
"Thank you."
Just as they were about to wrap up their conversation, they heard a sudden noise behind the rock they were hiding in. It turned out the stone man had heard their conversation and came over to check on them. The stone man tilted his head and looked at them with his pupil-less eyes, one black and one white. He still had a goofy smile on his face, looking quite harmless.
[Novelist: Such foolish fool's gold...]
[Fool's Gold: Shut up, Oxygen Face. I'll pretend to be controlled by the Abyss and throw my pickaxe at you.]
[Night Watch: Watching a Play.jpg]
[Cheerleader: The Abyss Eight's wipeout profoundly demonstrates the importance of nurses. If the Cyberseed wasn't the first to be killed, they still had a chance to escape.]
[Puppeteer: That's true, but you can't expect me to have time to touch people during the game.]
[Mercenary: Haha, you're so good at touching people that you can even fix a whole machine.]
[Psychologist: Just avoid using your face to catch drills. Demi's wine is becoming a rarity in games with you guys.]
[Doctor: Do you like me to lead the three Honkai?]
[Painter: Ahhhhh!]
"Huh, I thought someone was eavesdropping on our conversation, but it turns out it was you, the stone." The archivist breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to go back.
However, the sudden screams immediately set off alarm bells in the three people's hearts.
Conan, believing it was an attack from the Abyss, immediately ran towards the camp, followed closely by Sera Masumi and then the Archivist. The Stone Man paused behind him for a moment before slowly catching up.
Just as Conan expected, a creature from the abyss did attack the camp, but this creature from the abyss was the big guy who had accompanied them all the way. At this time, its mechanical structure was covered with strange ropes, and the jagged chain that originally served as its face opened like a hideous giant mouth, with countless wildly dancing ropes sticking out of it.
One of the ropes had already wrapped around the cyborg. The scream just now came from him. His vitality was sucked away in an instant, and the lignification process was greatly accelerated. Soon he really became as dead as a piece of wood.
"Mr. Cyborg!" The Collector waved the colored balls to try to distract the others. "Mr. Sentinel, hurry up!"
The sentry raised his crossbow and fired at the giant's head, but the guide's body, as if manipulated, shifted horizontally a distance and took the crossbow bolt head-on. The fragile wooden structure of the guide's chest shattered instantly, and her small body collapsed helplessly at the giant's feet.
The sentinels and collectors all cried out in shock, unable to believe what they were seeing.
Seeing that the big guy's feet were about to crush the sentry below into pieces, Conan rushed over and immediately summoned a football with his belt, and a powerful shot hit the big guy's head.
The big guy that was hit made a crackling sound similar to that of an electric current, and a radar on top of its head also spun rapidly, as if calling for support.
"Be careful!" Sensing the danger, Masumi Sera quickly tackled Conan. When the two climbed up again, a wooden pickaxe was stuck in the ground where Conan had been standing. The smile on the stone man's face was no longer innocent, but with a hint of viciousness and madness. With a casual move, he made the pickaxe fly back into his hand, and then he rushed towards the two.
The man on the top of the tower, who had been awakened long ago, immediately stepped forward to stop the stone man and turned back to shout at the others, "Run! I'll stop him! He's been completely infected by the abyss!"
Conan nodded, and immediately pulled Sera Masumi and wanted to run away, but he heard the archiver's heart-wrenching scream.
"Do not!!!"
Conan looked back and saw the Archivist running towards the fallen guide like crazy, not caring at all that the big guy's mechanical limbs could crush him into a meat patty with just a stomp.
"Mr. Archivist, get out of the way!" The collector was originally concentrating on dealing with the ropes from the abyss. Seeing the archiver's crazy behavior, she couldn't help but speak out a warning. It was this flaw that caused her to be tied up by the ropes.
After absorbing the harvester's vitality, the rope threw her aside and began to deal with the last remaining sentinel. The sentinel didn't hold out for long, as his helmet and armor were torn apart. Without any defense, the sentinel's vitality was eventually sucked dry.
In a short time, the expedition team was nearly wiped out. Their once reliable mechanical companions had become weapons of the abyss, ruthlessly slaying the companions who had supported each other all the way to the core area. Not far away, the stone men and the tower-top men were still engaged in a fierce battle, but it looked as if the tower-top men would soon be defeated due to exhaustion.
The archivist held the guide's broken body, staring blankly at everything before him: "Why is it like this again..."
After seeing this scene, Conan and Sera Masumi could no longer stand by and watch: "At least we must rescue Mr. Archivist."
