Chapter 321 Slapping the Face of the Treacherous Regent 16
In the days that followed, Leng Yuexing received messages from other Jinyiwei (Imperial Guards).
After some investigation and tracking, they discovered a shocking secret: the Left Chancellor was secretly raising a large number of soldiers in the towering mountain on the outskirts of the city!
These soldiers were numerous, well-trained, and well-equipped, and it was clear that they could not have been assembled in a short period of time.
Leng Yuexing knew that these soldiers were the source of the Left Prime Minister's confidence in rebelling.
“He has absolutely no respect for the city's soldiers and imperial guards.” Leng Yuexing held up a strip of cloth with the message written on it in front of Shangguan Jingzhi.
Shangguan Jingzhi glanced at it casually, "It seems he couldn't hold back any longer."
"Judging from your expression, you're not surprised at all?"
Shangguan Jingzhi pulled Leng Yuexing into his arms and hugged her, saying, "The Left Prime Minister is insatiable; it's common for things like rebellion to happen to him."
"So what do you plan to do?" Leng Yuexing asked, leaning lazily against Shangguan Jingzhi.
Shangguan Jingzhi gently kissed Leng Yuexing's thin lips. "Then it's up to you, my dear minister. You should have a plan in mind, right?"
Leng Yuexing chuckled and turned to look at Shangguan Jingzhi, "I do have a plan. Can you cooperate with me?"
"How should we cooperate?" Shangguan Jingzhi asked in a low voice.
Leng Yuexing turned her head and whispered in his ear, telling Shangguan Jingzhi the detailed plan. After that, Leng Yuexing asked with a smile, "How is this plan?"
Seeing Leng Yuexing's interested expression, Shangguan Jingzhi replied in a low voice, "Not bad."
"Then it's settled. I'll go make the arrangements now!" Leng Yuexing said, turning to leave.
Shangguan Jingzhi hugged Leng Yuexing tightly, "It's late, even if something comes up, we can talk about it tomorrow!"
Leng Yuexing glanced at the darkening sky outside the window and knew that was Shangguan Jingzhi's excuse.
Although he learned that the Left Chancellor's rebellion would take place in three days, there was no guarantee that he wouldn't bring the date forward.
So, Leng Yuexing patted Shangguan Jingzhi's chest and said, "If you don't want me to leave so much, why don't you come with me? You have a day off tomorrow anyway."
Upon hearing this, Shangguan Jingzhi agreed to go with Leng Yuexing without the slightest hesitation.
The two changed into black outfits, and Leng Yuexing led Shangguan Jingzhi away from the capital through a side path, heading towards the military camp in the suburbs.
Half an hour later, the two arrived at the military camp outside the city.
When the guards saw them, they stepped forward with their knives drawn and questioned them.
Leng Yuexing took out Shangguan Jingzhi's jade token. Upon seeing it, the guarding soldier immediately knelt on one knee and solemnly apologized to the two of them.
He then got up and ran towards the camp to report to General Li.
Before long, Li Yan came out of the tent in the camp. When he saw Leng Yuexing and Shangguan Jingzhi in the distance, he opened his eyes wide in disbelief.
He then rushed forward, knelt on one knee, and said in a loud voice, "This humble general pays his respects..."
Before Li Yan could finish speaking, Leng Yuexing interrupted, "General Li! We shouldn't publicize our visit!"
Li Yan took a second to react before realizing that he had almost exposed the Emperor's whereabouts in front of the entire camp.
His forehead was covered in cold sweat from fright. He swallowed hard and said in the softest voice he had ever used, "This humble general understands! Please come into the tent to talk."
Shangguan Jingzhi nodded, then took Leng Yuexing's hand and followed Li Yan toward the tent.
Upon entering the tent, Li Yan knelt on one knee and whispered, "This humble general greets Your Majesty!"
"Get up," Shangguan Jingzhi said in a deep voice.
He then sat down in the main seat in the middle of the tent and said in a low voice, "Let Minister Leng tell you the specifics. General Li, there's no need to be nervous."
"Your subordinate obeys!" Li Yan replied respectfully.
He stood up and looked at Leng Yuexing with a puzzled expression. "Lord Leng, what brings you here so late at night?"
Leng Yuexing knew that Li Yan was an impatient person, so she didn't bother to beat around the bush and said directly, "The Left Prime Minister is planning to rebel in three days. We came to you at this time to discuss countermeasures."
Leng Yuexing said these words casually, but Li Yan was so astonished that he couldn't close his mouth.
Then, enraged, he roared in a deep voice, "How dare you, you brat!"
His face flushed red, as if he were furious. Then he looked at Leng Yuexing and said, "Lord Leng, do you know where the Left Prime Minister is right now? I'll take my soldiers and kill him right now!"
Seeing the anger on Li Yan's face, Leng Yuexing knew that Li Yan really wanted to kill the Left Prime Minister right now.
He replied in a low voice, "Killing the Left Chancellor now won't solve the problem of his troops; it won't address the root cause."
“We can do this…” Leng Yuexing explained his plan to Li Yan in detail.
Li Yan frowned and said, "I understand what Lord Leng means. You want me to send half of the soldiers to hide inside the imperial city, and the other half to guard outside the palace after Li Yan leads his troops into the palace?"
“That’s it!” Leng Yuexing affirmed.
"Lord Leng's strategy of 'catching a turtle in a jar' is indeed excellent, but wouldn't it have been better for me to intercept and kill him directly outside the city? Why go through such a roundabout way?" Li Yan asked, puzzled.
“The Left Prime Minister has many supporters. If the people in the city and his supporters don’t witness him rebelling, it will be difficult to prosecute him,” Leng Yuexing explained.
“But that would put the Emperor in danger!” Li Yan objected.
“It’s alright,” Shangguan Jingzhi said in a deep voice.
"I will protect His Majesty, you can rest assured about that," Leng Yuexing assured him.
Seeing that the Emperor trusted Leng Yuexing so much, Li Yan knew that no matter what he said, the Emperor would not change his plan.
So he respectfully cupped his hands and said, "Then everything will be done as Lord Leng says."
Leng Yuexing nodded, preparing to leave with Shangguan Jingzhi, but suddenly remembered something. He turned to Li Yan and said, "By the way, the half of the soldiers who enter the capital must be disguised and enter in batches, so as not to be noticed by the Left Prime Minister's men!"
Li Yan respectfully agreed, and Leng Yuexing then left the military camp with Shangguan Jingzhi, feeling reassured.
After returning to their palace, Leng Yuexing and Shangguan Jingzhi slept soundly through the night.
The next day, after the two slept until noon, Leng Yuexing received a message from the Embroidered Uniform Guard at the city gate of the capital.
After Leng Yuexing finished reading the message, she handed it to Shangguan Jingzhi. After reading it, Shangguan Jingzhi silently returned the strip of cloth to Leng Yuexing. The two of them had complex and unspeakable feelings.
Last night, Leng Yuexing only told Li Jiangjun that half of the soldiers would be sent in disguised batches, but he did not expect that General Li would use such a method.
The message mentioned that many people carrying coffins entered the city gate today. They were dressed in mourning clothes and seemed to be from a large family.
The Embroidered Uniform Guard discovered that many of them were military men, not ordinary people.
Feeling something was amiss, he reported it to Leng Yuexing.
