Chapter 1 Corpse Transformation
Chapter 1 Corpse Transformation
In the stillness of the night, in a side room of a detached courtyard of the Lin family in Yongning Prefecture, two dim candles illuminated the white curtains and paper banners. In the center of the room, on several long benches, sat a thin wooden coffin, its original color unpainted.
The coffin lid was also a thin board, and according to local funeral customs, it was not closed tightly, so the deceased's shoulders and above were still exposed.
Tomorrow morning, the coffin lid will be nailed shut, and a funeral procession will carry the person into the Lin family cemetery under the cover of night, accompanied by a soul-guiding banner, paper money, and music.
In the flickering candlelight, the person in the coffin had a high nose, deep-set eyebrows, and a sculpted face; she was a rather spirited young woman. However, having been dead for several days, her face was pale, stiff, and eerily cold.
On the straw mound in front of the coffin, a girl in plain clothes knelt, looking tired. Her head was lowered, and she would occasionally lift it up. Her eyes were half open and half closed. After a moment of clarity, she would drowsily lower her head again.
The girl in plain clothes was half-asleep and had no time to be afraid.
However, strange noises gradually began to echo in the room, and the sounds became increasingly clear.
The girl in plain clothes heard this clearly, her face turned pale, she trembled with fear, and her drowsiness vanished instantly.
The sound was actually coming from the thin coffin in front of him?!
"Miss...Miss..." The girl in plain clothes stared wide-eyed at the thin coffin in fear, her limbs weak and her voice trembling as she called out.
"Ah!..." The girl in plain clothes suddenly let out a scream! She collapsed limply to the ground.
She suddenly heard a violent cough coming from the coffin, neither human nor ghost. Then, through the gap in the coffin lid, familiar black hair and a pale white face slowly rose!
In fact, the person who got up from the coffin experienced just as much fright as she did.
This corpse, the empty dwelling place of the soul, now has a new owner.
Danxian Luo Sifan.
A wisp of divine soul somehow drifted down to the lower realm and was reborn into the body of a female corpse.
The female corpse's cultivation was too shallow, so much so that most of Luo Sifan's past divine consciousness was locked away, leaving only the knowledge and memories that a mortal body could bear in his mind.
As her soul returned, the female corpse's stiff, cold body gradually regained its vitality. After gurgling and thrashing about for a while, Luo Sifan coughed up the corpse fluid from her lungs and, supporting herself with her barely movable bones, sat up.
The girl in plain clothes was terrified!
Luo Sifan slowly crawled out of the coffin. When he got to the ground, a group of servants from the Lin family were already standing around the mourning hall, trembling with brooms, carrying poles, and bamboo poles.
The girl in plain clothes scrambled out of the mourning hall. The crowd chattered and shouted, but none dared to rush forward and confront Luo Sifan.
Luo Sifan had been in a daze long enough. The remaining knowledge of the Pill Immortal was enough for him to calmly analyze the situation and accept reality.
The most important thing right now is to avoid being mistaken for a zombie or a vengeful ghost by these ignorant country folk and killed.
Clearing his throat, Luo Sifan put his hands on his hips and cursed:
"What are you yelling about? I'm not dead yet!"
He jumped a few times, his blood flowed more smoothly, and he became more and more like a living person. Pointing to a mature and composed-looking person in the crowd...
"You! Come here and feel my pulse! See if I'm alive or dead!"
A group of people looked at each other and pushed the person Luo Sifan had chosen forward.
Although reluctant, the man cautiously approached and touched the person. The body was warm, and the pulse was indeed beating!
"The young lady is alive! She's warm and has a pulse!"
The person kept a safe distance while excitedly announcing this.
With many people involved, there's more courage. If someone comes forward to confirm, it's easier to persuade the rest.
Many of Lin's relatives and friends arrived from near and far.
"Xiaozhi!" Under everyone's gaze, a middle-aged man with a long beard and a gray robe approached Luo Sifan with a complicated expression and called out in a trembling voice.
Luo Sifan had no idea who he was. She clutched her head and cried out in pain.
"My head hurts so much! I feel so dizzy!"
Holding onto the coffin, Luo Sifan stumbled forward a few times and collapsed softly to the ground, unconscious.
"Go and help Miss up!" the middle-aged man roared, directing several hesitant servants to step forward and lift Luo Sifan up.
It was indeed soft and warm. The servants were relieved to find it in their hands. A group of people, with happy expressions, carried Luo Sifan back to the young lady's boudoir and settled her in.
Throughout the day, Luo Sifan endured hunger and thirst, listened intently, and analyzed the identities of the various Lin family members who came to visit, serve, and chat.
Opening her eyes and rubbing her head, Luo Sifan pretended to wake up and sat up in bed. While she was "fainting," the servants had already changed her from her white funeral clothes into clean home attire.
Luo Sifan called out to the plain-clothed girl who was dozing off with her head propped up on her hand in the room:
"Xiao Zhu! I'm starving, go get me something to eat!"
The girl in plain clothes was half scared and half happy, and she ran towards the kitchen, lifting her skirt.
Luo Sifan threw off the covers and got up, taking the opportunity to search Lin Xiaozhi's boudoir thoroughly. He tried to deduce Lin Xiaozhi's preferences and temperament from the items in the room.
While Luo Sifan was dozing, he overheard many casual conversations about Lin Xiaozhi's death. Based on his current medical and alchemical knowledge, the cause of death did seem somewhat suspicious. However, Lin Xiaozhi's physical body had been decaying for three days, and her vital energy had undergone tremendous changes after her soul returned, making it impossible to investigate her physical condition before her death.
Luo Sifan could only proceed slowly, unraveling the mystery step by step to deduce the truth. After all, the unknown cause of Lin Xiaozhi's death posed a significant potential danger to Luo Sifan, who was using a substitute to return to life.
Lin Xiaozhi's boudoir contained many books, some of which had her annotations. Luo Sifan searched through the wardrobe and the table, then sat upright and began to peruse Lin Xiaozhi's collection of books, page by page.
The dozens of thread-bound printed books were mostly poems and songs, with the remainder being leisure readings of talented scholars and beautiful women, as well as notes and strange tales.
Luo Sifan found the text quite familiar, and memories of his past life cultivating in the mortal realm surged into his mind like a tidal wave.
This place must still be a corner of Yunzhou, but it's unknown which of the hundred kingdoms of Yunzhou it is.
"Miss!" Xiao Zhu said nervously at the door, carrying a table.
Luo Sifan beckoned her in, placed the plates and bowls on the table, and began to wolf down her food.
Xiao Zhu, gripping the table, watched with trepidation.
"What's wrong, Xiaozhu?" Luo Sifan asked vaguely, glancing at Xiaozhu with his mouth full of food.
“Miss…forgive my boldness, but you…you seem like a completely different person.”
Xiao Zhu mustered her courage and replied, looking at Luo Sifan with tears welling up in her eyes and a complicated expression.
Luo Sifan paused, swallowed the food in his mouth, and asked, feigning confusion:
"What's changed? Miss, I don't feel anything."
“Miss…the way you walk, the way you eat, the tone of your voice, even the way you look at people, this servant…this servant feels that you are a completely different person from before.”
Xiaozhu became increasingly frightened as she spoke, her fingers clenching the plate until they turned white.
Luo Sifan's eyes darted around, she put down her chopsticks, and looked utterly miserable:
"Xiao Zhu! You have no idea what kind of life your young lady has been living these past few days!"
Sobbing, Luo Sifan vividly fabricated a long, rambling story about Lin Xiaozhi's tragic experiences in the underworld, how she was transformed into a male by the King of Hell, and how she endured hardships, trials, and tribulations in the illusionary realm, experiencing nine lifetimes of tribulations.
"Now that I've been reborn, most of my memories from before are blurry. Sometimes I can't even tell whether I'm male or female, old or young!"
After telling the story, Luo Sifan sighed pitifully.
Xiao Zhu listened intently, her little heart rising and falling with the plot, and she believed almost everything Luo Sifan made up.
