Chapter 1656 - 467: Strategic Shift (Part 4)
On the other hand, their identities are indeed too sensitive, and forcing their way into the city would only make their allies feel awkward.
Most of the backbone of this army were once rebel forces roaming the mountains and forests.
And their current proud base, Sparrow Wood Territory, technically still belongs to Count Thelon Gard, who is currently making a scene at the Governor's Mansion.
They are victors, yet they are also a group of "illegal occupiers" without identity.
Not to mention, the city's citizens harbor complex feelings towards them, even they are hesitant about their own identities.
The war is over.
The famine seems to be nearing its end.
If they continue fighting, it seems they will only face the King and the empire behind him...
Watching Rayden sipping alone at the camp gate, Gunter walked over and sat down beside him, taking the jug he handed to fill his own cup.
This taste really never gets old.
Gunter smacked his lips and genuinely praised.
"This wine is really good."
Rayden grinned.
"Fine wine from Thunder City, said to originate from the Silver Pine Forest's vineyard. Honestly, I only got to drink it after joining the Salvation Army, my Lord probably never tasted anything this good."
Downing the red wine in one gulp, Gunter filled his cup again, casually saying.
"I hear there's a victory celebration happening at the Governor's Mansion, aren't you going to check it out as a Knight of Ryan Kingdom?"
Rayden's face showed an intriguing expression.
"Good idea, perhaps I'll run into Thelon Gard there, I bet his reaction will be quite amusing."
Gunter took a sip of the red wine, grinning as he spoke.
"I think he'd be quite willing to mend relations with you."
Rayden shrugged.
"Quite the opposite, he's probably wishing I'd drop dead immediately, taking his petty secrets to the grave."
Gunter fell silent.
After a long while, he asked.
"What next?"
Rayden glanced at him, raising his eyebrows slightly.
"Next?"
Gunter nodded seriously.
"I want to know what your plans are."
He wished to help his comrades who had fought alongside him, to ensure they find a good outcome, but first, he needed to know where they were headed next.
Rayden moved his gaze from him and looked toward the forest outside the barracks, the steadfast look in his eyes briefly lost.
"Honestly, I don't know."
Perhaps, the Oracle will guide them...
...
Rayden isn't the only one feeling uncertain about the future, but also many others who are clear-headed, especially the upper echelons of the Salvation Army.
Not everyone is as steadfast as Brennan.
They are not naive enough to believe that "Holy Maiden Carian" genuinely met with Saint Sis and received some Oracle from him.
Just in the situation at the time, the truth didn't matter; even the Sword Saint could turn a blind eye, so why couldn't they?
However now, the situation has changed.
As Angels truly descended upon the sky, many things that wouldn't have weighed before, perhaps now must be considered...
Luo Yan walked slowly along the edge of the camp on the dirt slope, with his hands behind his back, gazing at the outline of Twilight City in the distance.
Carian followed behind him wearing a plain robe, her gentle eyes filled with trust and devotion, like a nun waiting for the Oracle.
Actually, it's fine if there's nothing.
Perhaps even better.
She didn't have any worldly ambitions to begin with.
If Brennan's eyes still held a longing for power and land, while Rayden yearned for honor and knightly virtues, she simply wanted to make Mr. Colin happy.
Rather than responding to the expectations of believers, she's merely trying to please the god she imagines...
"Danger is approaching."
The sudden Oracle interrupted Carian's thoughts.
She pondered briefly, then asked in a hesitant tone.
"The Ratmen?"
"That's my opponent, temporarily unrelated to you."
Luo Yan shook his head gently, his gaze shifting from Twilight City to the distant west, seemingly piercing through the clouds burning red from the dusk.
Moments later, he spoke.
"As for your threat, this time it doesn't come from the Chaos, but from the Holy City."
Most people believed that the Angel descending from the heavens, slaying the Chaos Avatar in one strike was a divine miracle bestowed by the Divine Son, a display of the might of the god whom the Holy Maiden serves.
But Luo Yan wouldn't deceive himself.
That pure and vast, impartial Holy Light energy could only come from one place—
That must be the empire's Holy City!
Gregory IX detected the arrival of the Chaos Avatar through some special channel, and pressed the "nuclear button" in his hand!
Clearly, the Church Court's attention has already been drawn to the chaotic region of Twilight Province.
From Luo Yan's understanding of imperial history, a Grand Referee riding a Griffin is likely already on the way.
Once the Referee Chief arrives, all secular armies within the empire will theoretically follow his command.
Confronting someone like that head-on is purely a dead-end.
Why, you ask?
Of course, because of historical lessons.
On this land beneath his feet, a predecessor transmigrator has already tried it once, and learned that being one version ahead is genius, but being two steps ahead is a coffin.
Don't be fooled by the Rock Sword Saint Gangte standing firmly with the Salvation Army now, it's because Salvation Army is flying Saint Sis's banner.
