Chapter 16 Surviving in the Supermarket
Chapter 16 Surviving in the Supermarket
The supermarket had plenty of supplies, and after discussing it, the dozen or so people decided to wait at the supermarket for a few days. In the best-case scenario, they might receive government aid in a few days.
However, this did not include Yang Xiao, who firmly believed that government rescue was not imminent. Of course, he was not advocating for recklessly rushing out to fight the zombies head-on. But he still felt that everyone should prepare for the worst and be ready to evacuate at any time.
The three people in room 1203 thought so too. Although they didn't know why Yang Xiao was so determined, ever since they confirmed Lu Yuan's space, their assessment of this disaster had always been that it was heading in the worst possible direction.
DAY10
During the two days of rest at the supermarket, Lu Yuan learned self-defense techniques from Pei Sihao. Zhu Nan and Li Sisi also joined in the fun. Later, people who had nothing to do started to learn as well. After all, two more days of silence had passed, and most people already had a general idea of what to do.
Gu Nanfeng kept circling around Wei Guo, who was inactive, trying to figure out how to make Wei Guo less likely to be targeted by zombies. He had no solution to the "cannot kill living beings" clause in the current environment and could only think of other ways.
He took various small robot devices from the supermarket and, one by one, turned them on and released them by the electric fence at the supermarket entrance. Basically, any robot that could move on its own was quickly crushed and destroyed by the zombies as soon as it was released.
DAY11
Just as Gu Nanfeng was about to conduct another experiment with the small robot, the supermarket suddenly went dark, with only some emergency signs remaining lit.
"It seems the solar power generation is also malfunctioning." Pei Sihao stopped teaching self-defense techniques and looked around. "The supermarket should have a generator. Let's turn it on for emergency power generation."
Ruan Wen, who works at the supermarket, went to develop motors with three other employees. Lu Yuan, having nothing to do, turned on his phone flashlight and went to check on Gu Nanfeng.
"Why don't the zombies disassemble the phones?" Yang Xiao, who had been watching Gu Nanfeng conduct his experiments for three days, asked Lu Yuan, who was approaching with a flashlight, a soul-searching question.
In 2074, mobile phones will still be humanity's most important companion, though they will have undergone significant changes. Beyond their varied appearances, their functionality will be akin to having a small, intelligent computer in everyone's possession. However, many countries have begun experimenting with optical computer devices, where users can wear microchips to directly possess an intelligent optical device that integrates a computer and a mobile phone, potentially leading to the market withdrawal of bulky mobile phones.
However, for a pitiful guy like Lu Yuan, an old-fashioned touchscreen phone was already his limit.
"The zombies infected by this virus may only target moving robotic devices and some relatively powerful fixed devices." Gu Nanfeng's research over the past few days has not been in vain. Although he cannot completely solve the problem of zombies tearing robots apart, he has discovered that small robots wrapped in a lot of plastic can get closer to zombies.
"Brother Gu, the power's out. The situation outside might be even worse." Lu Yuan saw Gu Nanfeng calculating something on his phone screen, probably because he had found a solution to Wei Guo's situation.
"Didn't I tell you, the rescue isn't coming?" Yang Xiao opened another bag of potato chips and squatted down next to Gu Nanfeng with Lu Yuan, watching him write and do calculations.
Just as Lu Yuan was about to speak, the supermarket lights came on again. Turning around, he saw Pei Sihao already instructing everyone to turn off the lights in the less important areas, leaving only the main area where they would be active. The supermarket's generator was a very old model; its selling points back then were its low noise and small size, so you can imagine how poor its range was. Moreover, with the widespread use of solar energy now, the supermarket generator's fuel consumption was predictably low.
Seeing that Gu Nanfeng couldn't figure it out even after trying for a while, Yang Xiao patted his behind and went to help turn off the other lights on the door side. Lu Yuan helped Gu Nanfeng pack up the small robot that he didn't need, and just as he was about to leave, he noticed a faint red light flashing in the direction of a hot pot restaurant across from the supermarket.
“It’s SOS.” Gu Nanfeng looked in the direction Lu Yuan was looking and also saw the distress signal from the other side. “They probably saw that we had set up a generator here and then confirmed that it was safe here.”
Before the power came on, most shops in the mall were brightly lit. Some shops that suddenly turned off their lights even attracted a wave of zombies, so the shops with survivors didn't dare to change their environment. Until the power went out just now, everything was pitch black, and the zombies didn't know which way to run, so things seemed to have strangely balanced out again.
The supermarket turned on its generator. Although they quickly shut off the exterior and a lot of the lighting, it still caused the zombies outside to become agitated and rush towards the supermarket. The hot pot restaurant across the street took advantage of the chaos to send out an SOS signal.
They returned to the rest area they had set up next to the staff break room. After all, the break room, which was usually for two or three people, was too crowded with more than a dozen of them.
"There are people at the hot pot restaurant across the street. I wonder if they can bring some hot pot base when they escaped here so they can have hot pot." Yang Xiao is from City C. He has been eating self-heating hot pot in the supermarket for the past three days, but he still can't stop craving hot pot.
"The current power supply isn't enough to support us turning on the air purification system. Forget about hot pot, we'd better not even eat instant noodles." Pei Sihao was also tempted by the hot pot, but he had already experienced how sensitive the zombies' sense of smell were when he took a bowl of self-heating pot to watch Gu Nanfeng do an experiment the day before yesterday.
“Our supermarket has plenty of supplies. If they can come, our team will be stronger and it will be easier to make arrangements.” The others have been communicating with each other these past few days. Although the supermarket is not short of food and drink right now, if there is no rescue, they are all college students and they still want to try their best to find a way to get to the district government’s shelter.
The group from 1203 did not participate in the discussion. The current situation has deviated far from their original plan. There are currently 16 people in the supermarket. If more people come, there will be more opinions, which may not be a good thing in the current environment. Of course, they cannot leave the supermarket unattended, as the safety and supplies of the supermarket are well-known.
Actually, the best plan would be for them to find an opportunity to leave, but right now they have Weiguo, who can't be turned on and can't be secretly put into their spatial storage. And his sudden desire to leave the supermarket without planning to go with everyone else seems very suspicious.
There was also Yang Xiao there, constantly circling around the three of them. Gu Nanfeng and Pei Sihao both tried to get information out of him, but they couldn't get anything out of him. Lu Yuan strongly suspected that Yang Xiao had been reborn, but he lacked evidence.
