Chapter 251 Ammunition Box
Chapter 251 Ammunition Box
"I think this is the mysterious hidden team you mentioned earlier, Miss Gloria. Judging from the condition of the orc corpses, they were probably dead less than half a day ago. The large-scale orc commotion we saw earlier might also be due to this," Howard said. "After all, based on the information we know, this is the only explanation. Or were these Astra Militarum and Tech Priests sent by a third party?"
"Their weapon numbers use the same coding logic as the Karenyan garrison numbers. They're Karenyan, and..." The nun said as she took the Mechanic Priest's pistol from his right hand. After removing the magazine, the nun snorted again. "Anti-psychic bullets."
The nun unloaded the magazine filled with anti-psychic bullets and threw back the severely corroded pistol.
"The coincidences are getting more and more, and it's getting more and more interesting." Howard said, holding his chin with one hand. "I think we are getting closer and closer to the truth."
"I don't care about the truth," the nun said.
Howard could understand the nun's reasoning. He'd read a novel about a plot where someone on Earth devised a plan to kill soldiers and transform them into macroatomic ghosts to resist alien invaders. The difficulty wasn't in transforming them into macroatomic ghosts, but in keeping it secret. Leaking the plan would allow the invaders to prepare in advance. However, those chosen to become macroatomic ghosts would have to be extremely cautious. They had to ensure that those chosen were unaware of the fact that they would be killed and transformed into ghosts, yet still willing to fight for the humans who had betrayed them.
However, in the world of Warhammer, this is not a problem at all. There are many people in the human race who have been forgotten, betrayed, or even desecrated by the Empire, but are still willing to fight for the Empire. There are also undead soldiers like the "Macro Atomic Ghost".
It was clear that the Sister was just that kind of person. Having come this far and witnessed all this, she'd at least been deceived, if not betrayed. Yet, she remained unconcerned. Howard suspected that, despite her improved condition, if the Emperor suddenly appeared and told her to kill all her comrades and then commit suicide because it would benefit the Empire, she would likely do so. She prioritized the greater good, and even knowing she was part of a "necessary sacrifice," she had no regrets.
"But knowing the truth is never a bad thing," Howard said. "Maybe this doesn't apply to you, but there's no leader or superior who's forbidding you from knowing the truth. Besides, now that you're here, are you going to back down?"
"You don't need to worry about these things." The nun seemed a little impatient.
"Wait a minute! What's this?" Howard caught sight of another unusual object. It was almost as tall as Howard, triangular in shape, and covered in a brown cloth, resembling a large rock. Howard had initially mistaken it for a rock. But now, observing the dead Mechanic Priest, Howard had circled to the side of the object and noticed that a corner of the "rock" shone with a metallic sheen under the illumination of May's psychic flame.
"Stand back." The nun raised her hand and stood in front of Howard to separate him from the thing, while her other hand drew her gun and was on guard. But after she scanned the thing, she retracted her weapon and relaxed her guard.
Then she walked over to the thing and lifted the waterproof canvas.
Beneath the canvas lay open boxes of explosives and fuel. Detonators, dynamite, scatter mines, promethium fuel, laser guns, stacks of batteries, and even some short-barreled howitzers used by the human soldiers to counter Astartes armor. In a ground battle, a human soldier equipped with these weapons could, with luck, even take out an Astartes or two.
These astonishingly large and powerful weapons were stored in iron boxes. These boxes were extremely strong and bullets did not leave any marks on their surface, only slight dents. The orc spores only corroded the boxes on the bottom layer, and the weapons stored in the top boxes were still intact.
"So many heavy weapons might be useful outside, but using them in such a small space is tantamount to suicide. Carrying them will only slow us down." The nun shook her head and expressed her opinion, "A stupid decision! Didn't the person in charge of this operation consider this? He deserves to be shot!"
The nun picked up a bundle of bombs from the weapons box. She found that these were not military bombs but engineering bombs, which were specially used to blow up mine tunnels.
But the so-called mining bombs may actually have a higher equivalent than military bombs, because the explosion of military bombs causes less damage. The real damage is caused by the fragments produced after the explosion, while mining bombs mainly have an impact effect. If ten bundles of such explosives are tied together and detonated at the same time, the shock wave generated is enough to knock all life in this range against the wall and crush them into meat paste, and even this cave may collapse.
"They are all going to die, why don't they give it a try?" The nun said puzzledly while searching for something useful in the weapons box.
Howard knew what this crazy woman was thinking. What she meant by giving it a try was probably to explode all her ammunition when she was about to die, dragging all her enemies to hell with her.
"Maybe they didn't react. Maybe the battle was over so quickly that they didn't have time to do this," Howard replied. "And to be more optimistic, there's another possibility: they defeated the orcs. In that case, there's even less reason to do this."
The nun nodded slightly to indicate her approval of Howard's guess, then stuffed a grenade under her shoulder armor.
During the entire conversation, neither party said "self-detonation" or similar words, but both sides knew what the other meant.
After that, apart from the dead Mechanical Priest and the pile of munitions, there was no new discovery here, so the two men and the Eldar decided to search for the place where the battle began. This mysterious underground cave was like a maze, with countless narrow branches forming an unimaginably large network. If you wander around without clear guidance, you may die without being able to get out.
Following the guidance of the colony and the corpse, Howard and his team began to move again. However, this time, in order to guard against possible threats lurking in the darkness, May did not light the fire as before after consulting Howard, and the surroundings fell into a completely dark environment again.
But this creates a problem: as an Eldar, May is naturally able to see clearly in the dark; the nun has the assistance of the night vision system of the power armor; only Howard is a complete mortal, and in an environment without any photons, he is completely blind.
Finally, the nun took off her helmet and put it on Howard's head, solving the problem.
There was a strong smell of burning inside the helmet, the smell coming from the circuits that had been burned by the dead oil man's defense program. However, the oil man's program must have been merciful. Although the helmet's circuits froze for a while after the burn, the system resumed operation after the nun's tamping.
The combat helmet without the support of power armor was extremely heavy. When the nun suddenly put the helmet on his head, Howard felt his spine being compressed into an S shape. After he had barely adapted to the weight of the combat helmet and the burning smell inside, he immediately asked the nun a very important question to him:
"You've never sneezed in here, have you?"
Because of the night vision function and the burned wiring, everything Howard saw through the tactical screen was now covered with a gray-green filter, and some distant areas were even covered with fine noise. But despite the poor resolution, Howard could still see the nun's eyes rolling up to the sky.
"In fact, I vomited in there not long ago," the nun finally answered seriously, "after you took me to see the demonic remains."
"Uh... okay..." Howard said sullenly, and then he asked the second question: "You gave me the helmet, what are you going to do?"
So through the night vision system, Howard saw the nun's eyes gradually filled with mercury light, but when he took off the helmet from his head, he saw nothing. After putting it on and taking it off several times, Howard finally confirmed that the light emitted from the nun's eyes was invisible to the naked eye.
Apparently, the nun had used her psychic power to temporarily grant herself the ability to see in the dark.
"How much is this?"
Howard clenched his fist and shook it in front of the nun's eyes, but the nun knocked his helmet lightly and scolded him, "Stop playing around! Go!"
So Howard held the huge combat helmet in both hands and trotted after May.
