Chapter 265 Confession
Chapter 265 Confession
But at this moment, Mei's long and pointed elf ears moved, and then she said, "Governor, your assistant is coming back."
Howard originally thought that Esrick would ask them to hide, but the young governor didn't do that. After a very short moment of thought, he shook his head helplessly and said, "Then please wait a little longer."
"Are you sure she's on your side?" Howard inquired.
"It is now," Esrick replied.
"Okay, then we'll wait a while."
About two minutes later, the sound of hard soles hitting the ground was heard outside the house, and then the half-closed door was pushed open, and the assistant named Jasmine returned to the Governor's office. This time, she was wearing an extra military coat than before, but the hem of the coat revealed the red skirt, which was just a palm's width above the knee.
The girl named Jasmine seemed a little shy and reserved when she first opened the door, but when she saw the unexpected visitor in the office, her reaction immediately proved why she was assigned to work beside the Governor.
When she saw Esrick surrounded by a group of unidentified people, she raised her right leg and kicked open the half-open office door without any hesitation. Then she reached to the base of her thigh with her right hand, pulled out a pistol and took aim. The whole process took less than a second.
"Who are you? Get away from the Governor!" There was no trace of shyness and restraint on the young girl's face. She looked at Howard and his group vigilantly and coldly, and issued a stern warning.
As she spoke, Jasmine was still slowly retreating. This was not because she was timid. Now that the governor was being held hostage, she was not sure she could rescue him from this group of unknown people by herself. She needed additional assistance.
Now she was completely inside the office, and due to the governor's habit, there were no guards beside the office, so she needed to move her body away from the door frame so that she could be seen by the guards standing farther away.
Howard tilted his head and glanced at the governor, looking like he was just enjoying a show.
"Molly, they're my guests," Ace replied immediately.
Even so, Jasmine still did not put down her pistol, but she stopped retreating, with the muzzle of her gun still pointed at Howard, who was sitting at the desk closest to the Governor, and then began to examine the other people present.
It was not until she saw the nun that she tilted the gun slightly downward.
"Lord Archangel?" Jasmine asked tentatively. As an elite combat nun, Gloria was well-known among the defenders of Blackwater Fortress. In addition, Esrick had just used the nun's investigation report to make trouble at the meeting a few days ago. Therefore, even though Jasmine had not met Gloria much, it was still easy for her to guess the identity of this white-haired sister in power armor.
"Golia Hertala, from the Saints' Monastery, supporting the Archangel Squad of the Karenya Advance." The Battle Sister generously introduced herself to the girl, then added, "I'm here to verify your governor's loyalty to the Empire."
The nun revealed more about herself in those ten minutes than she had in the previous four days combined.
Howard wanted to laugh when he heard that, and then he realized that Esrick might want to laugh too. But in the end, both of them held it back, and each of them saw that the other wanted to laugh but couldn't.
Howard coughed and looked away, while Esrick picked up his coffee and took another sip.
"If everything the Governor does is considered disloyalty to the Empire, then no one is loyal!" After hearing what the nun said, Jasmine hurried to explain for Esrick. After all, the Sisters of Combat were notorious. They often judged whether an individual was loyal not by looking at objective evidence, but by their own subjective feelings. So basically when the Sisters of Combat said something like "I am here to test your loyalty", the subtext was basically "I suspect you are a little disloyal."
Those who undergo the test will basically lose some skin and flesh if they don't die.
"Jasmine, it's okay. They won't hurt me." Esrick stopped the girl from continuing to defend herself. Although he knew that the girl was completely loyal and concerned about him, what if she really said something she shouldn't have...
After all, he had been the governor for five years. It was pure nonsense to say that he had not done anything that was detrimental to the interests of the empire. Maybe someone could do that after gaining the power of the governor, but it was impossible for such a moral role model to become the governor.
In the end, Jasmine chose to obey the Governor's orders. She put away her gun, walked into the office, and closed the door.
"You...how do you plan to deal with the Governor?" However, after coming in, Jasmine asked the nun this question. Her attitude was very cautious, for fear of angering the nun.
In theory, the Governor's position was higher than that of a nun, but in reality, it was hard to say. The title of "Emperor's Daughter" was enough to scare the hell out of a Governor without any background.
"Am I that scary?" The nun didn't know why, but she felt very uncomfortable watching the girl's terrified look. "Do you think I would hurt a loyal person?"
It's hard to say.
Howard said in his heart.
"Jasmine!" To prevent the girl from making the situation worse and spiraling out of control, Esrick interrupted and changed the subject: "Jasmine, I'm taking them to see the sage."
"Sage?!" Jasmine was surprised when she heard this title: "They?"
Esrick nodded: "Yes, this is for the future of Karenya, and even more for the benefit of the empire."
"Oh...oh..." Jasmine responded in a low voice.
"Jasmine, I don't want anyone to know that the nun and the others came to see me. I don't want anyone to know that I took them to see the sage. But I can't do this alone. Can you help me?" Esrick asked.
"I...what should I do?"
"You don't have to do anything. Just like before, you stay here and help me deal with those endless documents. Pick out the ones you think are valuable and keep them for me to deal with. I will personally take them to see the sage. While I'm away... just treat me as if I'm slacking off somewhere like before. If someone comes to see me, you should know how to deal with it. Can you do this, Jasmine?"
"Follow...obey orders..."
"What a good kid."
