Chapter 407 The Price of Justice

Chapter 407 The Price of Justice

Under the dual attack of the Imperial Space Marines and the Manticores, the Chaos Space Marines were annihilated, and humans and twisted beasts became enemies again.

The Manticore gnawed on the corpse of the Chaos Space Marine, its sunken belly gradually swelling. Unlike ordinary beasts that would become lazy once full, this ferocious monster would still take pleasure in killing even when there was plenty of food.

Without the drive of hunger, the monster will be able to deal with its prey more calmly and will be more difficult to deal with.

The Imperial Space Marines certainly understood this, but they knew even more clearly that they were not real gladiators, and the battle they had just fought was not for Freya's entertainment.

So while the Manticore was tearing the corpse apart, the Imperial Space Marines took all the long-handled weapons on the weapon rack and once again launched an attack on the audience seats where Freya was.

The managers of the arena were also prepared this time. More tamed beasts were released. At first, the Empire's Space Marines could kill a few monsters blocking their way, but when the spears in their hands pierced the beasts' bodies, the spear tips would be stuck in the beasts' muscles and bones, and the wooden handles would break under the impact. Soon they were forced back and retreated to the knife thrown by Freya.

This was the reason why Freya threw down the knife. The announcer said that he had prepared a surprise for Freya, but how could a mortal's means be hidden from this great demon? So she chose to add some fun herself.

If the Chaos Space Marines win, then their fight for the ownership of the knife would be quite entertaining.

If the Imperial Space Marines win, will these loyal followers of the God-Emperor choose to use this power when besieged by the Manticore and the fighting beasts they subsequently raise?

The result was as expected. Until the corpses of dead beasts piled up into mountains and until their companions fell to the ground one after another seriously injured, the Empire's Space Marines did not seek strength from blasphemous things.

Just when they were about to be completely torn to pieces by the beast, Freya made a stop gesture.

Seeing this, a servant who was also in the stands took out a horn from his pocket and blew it hard.

The deep horn sounded throughout every corner of the arena. After hearing the horn, the ferocity in the eyes of those beasts that were blood-thirsty just now gradually faded. Then, although they were still growling unwillingly, they kept retreating and finally withdrew from the arena and started over.

Being able to make these monsters obey orders is a very incredible thing. In order to train these obedient monsters, countless tamers have gone through a long process of screening and breeding. The nearly 100 monsters killed by these Space Marines may be the result of decades of breeding in this arena.

When the beast left, the Imperial Space Marines, who were seriously injured but not dead, supported each other and stood up. They were scarred, but they never bowed to the demons before them.

"Your bravery and perseverance are commendable," Freya finally spoke. "Therefore, I have decided to give you a chance to serve me. I will not use you in the war against the Empire. Your enemies will still be the followers of other gods, but this time, they will fight for me."

But the Imperial Space Marines spat blood foam on the ground and replied firmly: "Wishful thinking! We will never surrender to you."

It was a natural answer. Freya certainly didn't think that this alone would be enough to make these Space Marines surrender.

"Demon, whatever tricks you have, just use them." said the Imperial Space Marine.

"I don't intend to do anything unnecessary," Freya said. "The Empire doesn't care about you, but I am different. Since you are unwilling to serve me..."

Just when Howard thought Freya was going to start torturing these Space Marines, the demon said: "I can let you go back and let you return to the Empire."

This answer was beyond everyone's expectations. The Space Marines heard every word Freya said, but they also knew the nature of the devil better, so they still did not express any opinion.

"I can let you go, and I don't want to exchange anything from you, but I need you to make a promise to me. You must swear to me that you will not tell anyone about what you saw here." Freya smiled and said, "How about this proposal?"

After a brief exchange of glances between the Imperial Space Marines, one of them asked, "Demon, what tricks are you going to play?"

"Don't answer questions with questions. Now is the time for you to make a choice. Either accept my proposal and swear an oath to me, or die."

There was another brief exchange of glances, and finally the Space Marines replied, "We choose the first option."

"Very good." Freya leaned back gently in her chair: "Swear."

The Space Marines hesitated for a long time, and finally the most seriously injured Space Marine took the lead and said: "I swear on my family name and honor..."

"Don't swear by your own names." But Freya interrupted them: "Swear by your gods, by the names of your legion masters, that you will never reveal anything you have seen and experienced here."

Freya's words silenced the Space Marines. How could they keep their promise to the devil? They were willing to swear to Freya simply because they wanted to leave here alive and tell the Empire everything that happened here, even if it would tarnish their honor and family name.

They could tarnish their own honor for the Imperium, but they could never dishonor the name of the Emperor and the Primarch. If they really swore to keep a secret to this demon in the name of the Emperor and the Primarch, then they could only abide by their promise to this demon, which would be tantamount to betrayal.

The demon finally revealed her vicious heart at this moment. She offered these Space Marines only two choices from the beginning to the end: rebel against the Empire or die.

Finally, the Empire's Space Marines roared again. Regardless of their physical injuries and the gap in strength between the two sides, they charged towards Freya again.

This time no wild beasts were released to stop them. They killed their way to the audience seats where Freya was, and were then all wiped out by the expressionless captain of the guard.

"What a pity." Freya shook her head slightly. Although she said this, there was no regret in her tone.

Howard finally couldn't help but speak: "I don't see the point of your acting in this drama."

Freya: "You mean, I'm acting?"

"Isn't it?" Howard said, "With your power, if you want to torture them, or destroy their beliefs and will to make them submit, you have plenty of ways and means..."

Howard paused at this point, because he inevitably thought of the nun he had changed, and his heart ached. Driven by this emotion, his words became more pointed:

"But you didn't. You know they won't kneel before you in the face of death, and you know they won't swear an oath on the honor of their genetic father. From the moment they enter this arena, death is the only outcome. So why bother with this unnecessary and boring performance? Are you acting to me or someone else? Or are you deceiving yourself... pretending to be a good person?"

The demon listened patiently to the human's accusation, his face expressionless, until he finished speaking before replying:

"Given your slowness, there's no need for me to act like a good person in front of you."

Howard was puzzled, so Freya asked:

"Mr. Howard, do you think you are a good person?"

Before Howard could answer, Freya gave him the answer:

"I'm sure you think so. You were truly brave and fearless when you fought the plague in Kalimdor, when you exiled the Great Unclean One with your blood, and when you shot yourself in the head. But have you ever considered whether you chose to do all this because of your courage, or because you subconsciously knew that if you failed and messed up everything, I would be there to clean up the mess? Being a good person comes at a price, and who is paying that price for you? It's me, a demon in your eyes. If you can't even see this, why should I continue to perform in front of you?"

After saying that, Freya sneered, stood up, and left the table surrounded by servants.

And Howard was left behind.
