Chapter 481 United Front

Chapter 481 United Front

According to the settings Howard knew, the current Necrons race originated from the former Necrontyr.

About 60 million years ago, the Necrontyr, who were still flesh and blood, made a deal with another existence in order to win a war, and the entire race was transformed into the steel bodies they have today.

The price is the souls of all the Necrontyrs.

This transformation brought great power to the Necrontyr race, making them the ultimate victors in the war, but the lack of soul caused the race to stagnate in the years that followed.

Most Necrons have lost almost all of their memories and personalities as Necrontyrs, and they only imitate their past behaviors based on the memories of their transformation.

For example, the Necron named Hevian, although she already has a mechanical body, she still tries to eat normal food as usual, and even uses instruments to detect toxicity before eating.

She knew it was stupid and pointless, but she couldn't resist the procedure.

The Necrons' dynasty is clearly divided into classes, and Hevian is the Pope of the dynasty, which is the pinnacle of the dynasty, with the highest power and the best means of protection.

But she couldn't resist this established procedure, let alone the lower-level Necrons. Many of the lower-level Necrons might just be puppets with some remaining fragments of personality.

So based on the known settings, plus what Lia Weide said, that Hevian was trying to save her race, Howard guessed that the Necrons might also be trying to find the soul of their race.

The reason why he said "also" was because Howard knew that Hevian was not the only Necron who was trying to retrieve the souls of the Necron.

However, this conclusion still doesn't seem to explain why Hevian used humans for experiments, or why she named the testing site "Second Terra." Biologically, humans and Necrontyr are completely unrelated. Could it be that humans are simply easier to collect as test subjects? Just like in real life, when monkeys and apes are closer to humans, but for economic reasons, they choose to use mice for experiments?

So Howard chose to put his doubts aside for the time being and asked Leah Weide an important question:

"So, Ms. Lia Weide...where do you stand?"

Lia Weide: "I've already said that I'm not opposed to cooperating with this alien."

"If an alien civilization could offer me advanced technology, I certainly wouldn't reject it unless I were an extreme religious fanatic," Howard said. "But it's obvious that the benefits you and this alien force exchange are two-way. How do you view what this alien force has taken from you?"

Howard then added, "Do you know what will happen to those humans she took away from your family? Even if you don't care about these lives, what do you think of this experiment with alien power itself? Obviously, if this experiment succeeds, it will greatly enhance the alien race. But if the alien experiment succeeds, do you think they will still need you? And what kind of threat will this enhanced alien race pose to the human empire? Have you considered these things?"

From Howard's perspective, or from the perspective of a Warhammer human, the Helveticon family could be said to be traitors to the Empire. The mere fact that they colluded with the aliens and assisted them in experiments was enough to convict them, not to mention that the family was further suspected of having connections with Chaos... After all, Howard wasn't swept here by some warp turbulence this time, but was formally invited here.

Although what he had done up to this point could definitely not be called loyal, he asked these questions this time not to blame Liavide, but out of curiosity about her deeper motives. There must be a reason for betraying the Empire, and it would be too cheap to betray the Empire just because of some scientific and technological advances of the Necrons.

"Do you want a perfunctory answer or a real answer?" Lia Weide said.

Howard: "Both."

Lia Weide: "Even without us, Miss Hevian can collect human test subjects on her own. Unless the Empire directly declares war on Miss Hevian, humans have no way to stop her experiments."

"That's a disappointing answer," Howard said. "Hopefully, that's just a perfunctory answer."

"Before I give my second answer, I would like to ask you a question."

Howard: "Speak."

"What do you think the Empire... no, should I say humanity... what do you think is the greatest threat humanity currently faces?" Lia Weide asked this question and offered several options: "Xenos? Chaos? Traitors to the Empire? Or perhaps the termites within the Empire?"

"I don't know," Howard said. "But I'm guessing you have an answer to this question, and it's not one of the options you gave."

"I'm sorry you guessed wrong. My answer is among these options." Lia Weide replied: "That is, alien."

Lia Weide: "But there's more than just one kind of alien in the universe. Some aliens also possess reason and civilization, such as the Necrons represented by Miss Hevian, and the Space Elves. Although we are often hostile, there are also examples of communication and cooperation."

Lia Weide: "But with some aliens, there is absolutely no possibility of communication and cooperation."

Lia Weide: "As early as the Dark Age of Technology, before the founding of the Empire, some humans who explored beyond the galaxy encountered this type of alien. However, the corresponding records and data were lost in the subsequent years. Miss Hevian's race had records of this type of alien long before that, and they have preserved it to this day. In their records, this type of alien is called the Devourer."

"You mean the Tyranids?" Howard understood.

"It seems I don't need to explain this to you," Leah Weide admitted Howard's conjecture. "The Tyranids are already a huge threat to humanity, but from what I understand, the Tyranids currently invading the galaxy are just a small offshoot of this vast alien population. When the swarm truly arrives, all conflict within the galaxy will end... because by then, there will be no life other than the Tyranids."

"The Necrons represented by Miss Hevian share the same view as me. This kind of thing must never be allowed to happen. At least in this matter, humans and Necrons are allies on the same front."

"And now, for various reasons, some ignorant people are trying to undermine this front."
