Chapter 205 The Bizarre Post-Apocalyptic World 22
Chapter 205 The Bizarre Post-Apocalyptic World 22
Lin Xiaoqian felt a little sad, so she went back to the kitchen, took out a few more steamed buns, and ladled out a bowl of steaming, fragrant eight-treasure porridge to deliver to Sister Yuan.
At the same time, five miles away from the town, the roar of an engine suddenly broke the surrounding tranquility.
Two modified off-road vehicles sped towards them like cheetahs, and just as they were about to reach the edge of the town, the lead vehicle suddenly slammed on the brakes without warning.
The wheels rubbed violently against the ground, producing a sharp, piercing sound and kicking up a cloud of dust that seemed to envelop the vehicle like a yellow haze.
The door of the lead car was pushed open with a "bang," and a man with a buzz cut jumped out of the car. He was wearing a gray bodysuit that outlined his taut and powerful muscles, and he wore sunglasses with a scar on his right cheek underneath.
Immediately afterward, he reached down and removed his sunglasses, revealing a pair of astonished eyes. He quickly turned around, bent over slightly, and said into the car, "Captain, the white fog around that town has actually disappeared!"
Inside the car, there were two men and a woman, some wearing leather jackets and others wearing overalls, all dressed for activities.
One of the men, with a cool demeanor and wearing a black leather jacket, slowly raised his head, his deep gaze probing the town ahead through the windshield.
His expression remained unchanged, like a cold statue, only his slightly furrowed brows revealed a hint of doubt in his heart.
At that moment, the door of the car behind was also pushed open forcefully, and a burly, fat man strode out. His steps were quick and powerful, and he approached the car in front in a few steps. He opened his mouth and asked, "Captain, Dr. Su asked me to come and ask why the car suddenly stopped?"
The man in the black leather jacket turned to look at the fat man, his voice deep and magnetic: "Fatty, why aren't you in the car protecting Dr. Su? What are you doing getting out? Isn't there a walkie-talkie in the car? Can't you just say what you need to say over the walkie-talkie?"
The fat man scratched his head, a simple and honest smile on his face. He chuckled twice and said, "Captain, we've been traveling all night, and my butt is about to fall off. I really can't stand it anymore, so I'm getting off to stretch my legs."
Captain Wei Kai gestured with his eyes towards the town ahead and said, "We're almost there. The white mist we saw when we passed by here earlier has disappeared."
The fat man then looked up at the town and saw the scene not far away. His playful smile vanished instantly, replaced by a solemn expression.
"When we passed by here last time, our team wanted to go in and look for supplies, but no matter which direction we entered from, we always came out like we were trapped in a maze. Now that the white fog has disappeared, does that mean we can go in?"
Wei Kai frowned slightly, his gaze still fixed on the town. After thinking for a moment, he said, "No matter what, whether it's dangerous ahead is unknown. The further we go, the more vigilant we need to be. Everyone, please be careful and alert."
Everyone present nodded solemnly.
Wei Kai added, "Fatty, when you get back in the car, tell Monkey to drive carefully and make sure to protect Dr. Su."
The fat man replied, "Don't worry, Captain."
Perhaps sensing the tense atmosphere, the man in sunglasses said in a deliberately relaxed tone, "Captain, since the apocalypse, our Chaoyang Squad has faced countless life-or-death situations. This mission is just to help Dr. Su find two people, not to kill high-level zombies. Don't be so nervous."
Wei Kai's expression remained unchanged, and he said seriously, "Don't be careless once we're out here. Get in the car and let's go!"
Everyone returned to their cars, the engines roared again, and the convoy slowly headed toward the town.
As they got closer to the town, everyone's nerves began to tighten.
Except for the driver, all the members of the Chaoyang Squad picked up their guns and scanned everything outside the car window with wary eyes.
As the SUV slowly drove into the town, there wasn't a soul in sight on the streets; it was eerily quiet.
"We're entering town. Be careful, and keep communication open," Wei Kai whispered the order over the walkie-talkie.
The fat man in the passenger seat of the car behind, holding a gun, picked up the walkie-talkie and replied, "Roger that, Captain."
Behind him sat a woman with fair skin, a slender figure, a low ponytail, and frameless glasses.
Seeing the somewhat familiar scene outside the car, she became excited and quickly said, "Go two more blocks ahead, my house is on the second street ahead, turn right."
The fat man turned to look at her, then turned on the walkie-talkie and said, "Captain, Dr. Su said her house is on the second street ahead, turn right."
Wei Kai raised the walkie-talkie in his hand: "Understood."
The short-haired woman sitting next to him suddenly spoke up: "Brother Kai, do you think we can find Dr. Su's mother and brother?"
Before Wei Kai could answer, the man in sunglasses driving in front spoke up: "Hey, Sister Rose, it's been more than three years since the apocalypse. We've been to quite a few cities and towns in these three years, and they're all ruins. Can there be any people in ruins? Even if there are, they're probably zombies or monsters. I reckon Dr. Su's mother has probably already perished. Even if she did meet her, Dr. Su probably wouldn't recognize her."
Wei Kai glared at the man in sunglasses and said seriously, "San'er, don't talk nonsense, or the client will hear you."
San'er chuckled and said, "Captain, is your walkie-talkie switched off?"
"Drive your car well."
Rose, standing beside him, frowned slightly, looking at the town outside the car window, and murmured, "But this place is really strange. It doesn't look like a post-apocalyptic place at all. Most of the houses are not abandoned, and it looks like people are still taking care of them and living there."
The convoy continued to move slowly forward, turned right at the second street, and the third house was Dr. Su's house.
Two cars were parked one after the other in front of a large iron gate.
Dr. Su's voice trembled slightly: "This is it, I've arrived at my home."
As soon as the car stopped, she eagerly opened the door and got out.
The fat man followed her out of the car and stood behind her, looking around warily.
The walls around the iron gate were covered with ivy, and the paint on the gate was peeling and mottled, but the entrance was clean and tidy.
Dr. Su walked quickly to the iron gate, her body trembling slightly. She didn't know what kind of scene she would see when the gate opened.
Wei Kai and the others got out of the car and surrounded Dr. Su.
"Dr. Su, please step back, I'll open the door."
All the members of the Chaoyang Squad raised their guns, loaded the bullets, and Wei Kai stood in the middle. He reached out and gently pushed open the courtyard gate. The iron gate creaked open, the sound particularly jarring in the silent environment.
The scene in the courtyard came into view. The courtyard was clean and tidy, with all items neatly arranged and not a speck of dust.
Dr. Su couldn't help but call out towards the yard, "Mom? Xiao Zhuo? Are you there?"
However, there was no response from the courtyard; only Dr. Su's voice echoed faintly in the air.
